It's not the best, but it does have an element of that to it. Most elementary school education (ages 6-12) particularly in "social studies," which is history and government, emphasizes nationalism. The limey above is right that we do say the Pledge every morning and have flags in the classroom. Personally, I think that's fine. Societies and governments require a certain level of "buy in" by the polity in order to function with stability, and selecting which historical events to teach and how you convey that information is a big part of that. Was the prehistorical agricultural revolution really a good thing? Anthropological evidence suggests no, yet we universally think moving from hunter-gather to farmer was good for the human race. Was the industrial revolution a good thing? Maybe not, with urbanization and its attendant problems such as disease, pollution, crime, etc. Yet again, we accept that it was because that's how it was portrayed when we were 8 or 9 years old. You never know as a child how contentious the adoption of the US Constitution actually was, nor do you really get a chance to grasp how life-altering Watergate was for American politics. It's all part of the plan to train young children to be good citizens. There are plenty of arguments as to whether or not this is a good idea, I tend to believe it is, as long as it's countered with a healthy dose of critical thinking in high school and college. It's better to question and create change within the political structure, in my mind, as long as the structure is reasonably open to considering that change. It's different when you're dealing with a totalitarian regime, I think, but that's really not what we're dealing with the US, despite what the foil-hat wearing nut jobs may say.

Not really, we all might hate it, but school is a necessary evil. Without it, we would never learn anything, though some of what we learn can seem pointless. Personally, I think School should be centred on teaching important life skills (such as cooking and First Aid) and that you should then pick the subjects you are passionate about. For example, I can't stand maths, and never in 5 years after leaving school have I ever used it for anything but the most basic sums, I would rather have spent more time in PE and History (things I enjoyed), with maths still being taught, but less time dedicated to it. I'm sure many people will disagree, and it would never work, but still I can hope.

Sorry I went a bit off topic.

Mind control/brainwashing are treatments that are not agreed upon. The process is without consent. Education is different in that the subject consents to what is being taught. Being forced to learn or agree to something, under threat or loss, is coercive and can be considered a form of brainwashing.

I'm not sure about in Britain but i heard than in america every school has the american flag up and they have to say the pledge of allegiance everyday?!!?!? that's brainwashing, in England flags aren't even aloud in public schools for fear of intolerance and aggressive patriots.

Only if the parents allow it.

We teach our daughter to question everything she is taught and to use common sense. Sadly most parents don't want much to do with their kids and leave them to the parent bought devices, ipods, cellphones, game decks and the like.

For most parents of today it's easier to let the teachers raise the kids than be involved and do it yourself.

No. The "best form" is the teaching of religion and politics, much of which is taught in the home.

    Very much so.

It gets everyone singing from virtually the same hymn sheet.

I feel that History class curriculum has heavy bias towards whatever country it's set in.
