Sealing lids on canning jars?
I have several 1/2 gal pickle jars with lids. (lids are larger than wide mouth Mason jars), I would like to can tomato's and okra from my garden in them. I am concerned about the lids not sealing and was wondering if there may be some kind of seal available to put under the lids?
I will be using a 23 qt pressure canner. I hate to wast these large great glass jars.

If the lids have previously been used, they should be discarded. Always buy new lids for each time the jars are used for canning. The bands can be reused, but the lids cannot.
You should be able to find lids that will fit at your supermarket, hardware store, variety store such as Target, or other place that canning supplies are sold.

Most home canning jars are not this large. Half pints, pints and quarts are standard. In order to adhere to strict canning guidelines, you must use approved equipment. That includes lids. There is no special seal to compensate for a lid that is ill-fitting.
Also, Okra must be canned in a pressure canner unless you plan on pickling the okra.
Do it up right, you will feel better about your food and proud of your garden.

They can be used. The bottom of the lid is coated with something that feels like silicone. It acts as a gasket that holds the seal. As long as there is not damage to this coating, it will work. Extra precaution won't be necessary.
Source(s): Contrary to popular belief, canning jar lids can be reused, as long as the rubber "gasket" that lines the outside part of the bottom of the lid is not damaged. - ?Lv 44 years ago
Be very careful!! What you desire to do isn't even extremely air tight once you're putting "damp" nutrition in them, you could die of botulism while you're actually not fairly careful. does not sound like an extremely good thought to me!!!
