Parents of toddlers: Diaper bag question?

My daughter is now 18 months old. Her poor diaper bag is beat all to heck, coming apart, etc, and it's time for something new. It's good timing, because we're going to Las Vegas next week. I'm thinking it might do to just purchase a large backpack instead of another diaper bag. It seems that there's plenty of room in one, and it would be oh-so-much more convenient not to have to carry it the way you have to carry a diaper bag, and be able to have it on my back.

My question is this: Can you think of any drawbacks to using a backpack as a diaper bag? Or do you have any other suggestions for something that might work for us?

Thanks for your experience!

My son's diaper bag got beat all to heck a little while ago and I began using one of my old back packs to tote around his stuff. The only drawback I found was that the diaper bag had a cup holder sewn in for sippy cups and the backpack doesn't. It's only slightly annoying and I just give my sippy cup to my son for him to carry when we are going to the car or stroller (we take a lot of walks).

When our now four-year-old daughter was a baby, we had a habit of leaving the diaper bag as the last bag we take out when leaving for a trip. Once, when she was a few days shy of 21 months, we left for a trip to New York City. In our rush to get to my husband's sister's college graduation party, we neglected to bring the diaper bag. (I had nursed her to sleep while my husband was packing the car.) However, we did have plenty of diapers, at least. My SIL is the type who used one school bag a year because she always got a new one for the new year. (I got a new bag every few years.) We told my MIL what had happened and I asked her if her daughter had an old bag. She did-- an old backpack. It worked great. It was big enough for plenty of diapers and a spare change of clothes and small toys (and a magazine or two and a book or two for me, for when I nursed her, on the train, etc.), the front pocket held the changing pad and wipes and the smaller front pocket held other little things. The side pocket worked well for sanitizer....

We used it until she was potty trained and now for our 17-month-old. Try looking at Goodwill. You can find some good bags there for less than ten, even five dollars.

Source(s): ETA: Sippy cups-- I don't remember what we did for my daughter. However, we have the kind in which the straw "hides" so it doesn't leak and we have some leak proof ones as well. I just stick it in the bag, as it's just water. (If we take soy milk with us, it's in an insulated lunch bag with ice packs.) Also, ourgood stroller has cup holders by the handle andone on the try for the baby. (We have a jogging stroller with cup holders by the handle and a much older stroller with no cup holders.)

My handbag: Gum/mints, cigarettes and a lighter (many times 2 rather), money/playing cards etc. small %. of kleenex, cellular telephone, pen, notepad, pocket calculator (reason i'm cool like that, haha). Diaper Bag: diapers, sippy cup, a snack or 2, exchange of garments, tylonol, thermometer, sunscreen, solar hat, some small books, a vehicle or 2, a pad of paper and pencil. while you're searching for some available issues to 'carry alongside' places make a stop on the greenback keep (i could advise with out young babies if available). you may get a ton on thrilling little toys that, granted won't final long, yet would be new, thrilling and relaxing to maintain their intrest for a at an identical time as. Plus, maximum of them do no longer take in alot of room.

I use a diaper bag normally, but whenever I'm travelling, I use a large backpack. It's easier if I have to carry my two year old in airports etc. It doesn't matter what you use, as long as you like it and can carry everything in it. Enjoy Vegas!

I use my purse, but I'm not in vegas. I don't see why a backpack wouldn't work the same as a diaper bag. A diaper bag is only a marketing device any bag will hold what you need.

I've used a purse, tote bags and a back pack to pack up stuff for my son before and out of those three I prefer the back pack when traveling. First of all, my purse is already cluttered enough with my things AND my husband's things. A tote bag is fine if it's just going to be sitting in the room. I certainly don't want to have to carry my purse along with the tote bag. I'd go with the back pack because then you don't have to worry about the contents falling out plus you can have your s/o carry it. It's also more comfortable too.

I use this backpack all the time and love it. Not sure it's very stylish for vegas! lol... However, this fits so much in it.
