How long before I need to put in more engine coolant? *Urgent*?
I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla, about 35K miles, I get the oil changed every 3K miles religiously. I am going to my hometown tomorrow about 11 hours away for a wedding that is happening on Saturday. So I usually check everything with my car the day before to ensure that my tires are not low and the oil is plenty and such. I had the oil changed last week as well. This morning, I went to add more windshield wiper fluid and I noticed that my pink engine coolant is about an inch above the "Low" mark line on the little coolant tank. I do not want to risk having my engine overheat, but I am leaving tomorrow at 5am to get to my hometown in time for the rehearsal dinner.
I have a few questions:
-How many more miles can this remaining amount last before I have to get this system serviced?
-Would it be okay to drive 11 hours (round-trip), and then make plans to have the engine coolant system serviced next week?
-Can I add more of the pink engine coolant to it without having to flush out the system on my own (if I needed to- today)?
-Typically, how long can a brand new car, with a new tank of engine coolant usually last? (Just wondering as I bought this car brand new in '08 and would like to know for future reference)
*I live in South Florida and will be driving to my hometown in Georgia tomorrow at 5am, I have Advance Auto Parts across the street, I already have had the oil changed and new brake pads replaced- kind of need to stretch my dollar til next week when I get my paycheck in first thing on Monday.

Firstly I think that its great you look after your car so well, most people don't realise how important changing the oil is!
As for your coolant- when a service is done they will usually check the strength of the coolant. The whole point of the system is to keep the engine cool (hence 'coolant'). Now it can do this with normal water, the only reason antifreeze is added to the water is to make sure you don't get in to the car one morning and you try to start the car with the water frozen (which would destroy the engine coolant system). If your coolant is too weak then it doesn't have enough antifreeze in the mixture which may mean that it will freeze in low enough temperatures.
If you think your level is low feel free to top it up! There won't be any ramifications as the coolant has already been worked around the whole engine- if you were to lose all of your coolant (e.g. if there was a leak) then you should get it refilled by a specialist. But it is fine to top up!
Engine coolant should never leak- the system should be AIR-TIGHT so if you are losing coolant then there is a leak somewhere.
Hope this helped.

Well if the coolant is 1 inch above the add line I wouldn't add any at all. You should have a low coolant light that will illuminate if it gets too low. And if you really want to top it off, just use regular water as it will barely affect the mixture. You should get the coolant flushed at around 100,000 miles or close to the 5 year mark. Which ever comes first. I think the cooling system on your car should be good enough to make it the sedding. I hope this helps and good luck.

I think your coolant reservoir is marked as "Full When Hot" and "Full When Cold".
If your coolant is at or above either of those lines when hot or cold you will be fine.
You don't need to add any coolant and shouldn't EVER have to add any coolant since your cooling system is a sealed system.
The only time you should ever need to add coolant is when you have a coolant leak, or service done on your cooling system.
Nothing to worry about, go ahead and enjoy your trip.
P.S. You don't need to change oil so frequently. Most newer cars recomend oil changes between approx 5,000 and 7,500 miles.
See your owner's manual for exact information.

If you are in the northern USA that would be a bad idea during this time of the year.... When not in use the water could freeze then expand and crack your engine block or pop out a freeze plug... If your down south you can get away with this temporarily - a week or two...... You dont want to continuously have just water -- plain water doesnt transfer heat as well as coolant does

If the coolant is not in the safe range, add until it is. Look into the maintenance schedule as to when to change it out. Toyota and many others are using a long life coolant but I am not sure as to when that started or if yours would still have it in there.

your coolant is fine. once it is hot it will probably have a higher level. they say you should flush the radiator (engine coolant) about every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, but this is not a big deal. You can throw some water in there if you would like. But no real need to worry unless all of your coolant is running on the ground.

YOu worry for nothing really. NEVER get fluids topped up at local oil change centers!!! AS long as your fluid is not MISSING, you are ok!!! WHen you have a spare moment, stop by ANY Toyota dealer and ask THEM to top up your fluid. It is normal to lose a VERY small amount over time, as fluid will evaporate a bit. Do NOT pull your hair out over it! YOu have a GREAT car that will last for 300,000+ iles! Do your self a BIG favor, andjust get ONE oil change each year with SYNTHETIC OIL< and stay away from CHEAP oil change specials. They use BAD WAX based oil that makes sludge, and will compromise your engine sensors and converter over time!! Using MOBIL ONE 0W-30 or 0W-20 and chnging it even TWICE a year, is ENOUGH! You are over doing it. Use ONLY the genuine TOYOTA fluids, and parts, for it's whole life, and stick with SYNTHETIC OIL! NEVER get talked into using those CHEAP oil change bargains!!! GOOD LUCK!! Your car requires NO trans or coolant changing till close to 100,000 miles. 50,000 miles is ok, too, but not necesassary. The factory uses ALL synthetic fluids that last LONGER than the older MINERAL oil based fluids with high WAX contents. GOOD LUCK!!
