Blood pressure question?

I'm 17 and just recently tried to donate blood. After an hour and a half wait and a ton of paperwork, they took my vital signs and my blood pressure was too high to donate.

-What could have caused this?

I'm not obese, and have never drank or smoked.

-How can this be detrimental to my health?

-How can I improve my blood pressure?

First I would look at your diet. Diet can play a major role in blood pressure. Also, do you have a history of high blood pressure in your family? If so, this could also be the source of your high blood pressure as many times it is genetic. Because you are so young, if you can get it under control now it should not have any adverse affects on your health. However, if you let it go for many years without taking care of it, it can lead to things like heart disease.

there are many factors that can affect blood pressure. stress, diet, level of fitness, etc. chances are you were probably just stressed about donating blood. go to a store that has a blood pressure machine and see what it is. if it's still high you may want to see a doctor. you can also purchase a blood pressure machine to monitor it at home if you're worried about it.
