Do my opening sentences make sense (Great Gatsby essay)?

I am writing a paper on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and how it reflects the 1920's. The title of my paper is "Gatsby's Roaring Twenties". Here are my first two sentences:

Carelessness, prosperity, hard work, and opportunity are characteristics that relate to the open-mindedness of the 1920’s. These distinctive traits exemplify the typicality of the reoccurring trends that embody the American Dream of this decade.

MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU ARE:

1. Does it make sense? I've used words that are larger than I'm used to using. Do you have any other suggestions?

2. If you've read the novel, do you have any other ideas of what I could include in my essay?

3. Is anyone interested in correcting/proofreading my paper after I am done? If not, it's fine. It will be at least 3 pages long.

THANKS SO MUCH! :)

    1. it's great! the only thing that confused me was the first 4 words, to me carelessness and hard work don't go together. I see if you are trying to get a "just live life" kind of carelessness but to me it doesn't sound good try something like, "carefree attitudes, prosperity..." (if that's the kind of Carelessness you are trying to get at)

    2. I have not read the novel sorry! Should I? Is it good? ( love reading)

    3. I could, but like I said, haven't read the novel, so if it's fine that I haven't, then sure, but if not, sorry.
