No it is not infected, it doesn't look infected at all, what it is is rejecting.

Surface piercings are done with surface "staple bars" like this - http://www.bodyjewelleryshop.com/online_store/tita...

Straight barbells are totally unacceptable for surface piercings and reject in a matter of weeks, sometimes even days. Your piercing is growing out and you'd better take it out now before you get some horrific scars for life. It's not infected at all so you don't need to worry about that.

The redness and swelling indicates where it's growing out. Next time go to a good piercer who pierces with surface bars, and make sure you do your research so it doesn't happen again! Good luck

I can't tell - is that a straight barbell or is it a Tygon barbell? If it is a straight barbell then why in the world would you not have done your research before getting a surface piercing?

If it was infected you'd have excessive redness, hot to the touch feeling, and yellow/green pus usually with an odor coming out from it. If it was rejecting the skin would be getting thinner and thinner.

If it's a straight barbell, it is going to reject no matter what you do and you need to go ahead and take it out, keeping the wound clean with sea salt soaks twice a day for 5-10 minutes each soak, and get it repierced by a piercer that actually knows what they are doing. If it is Tygon, you just need to be doing the sea salt soaks...although it does look pretty angry for 4 weeks which is why I'm assuming it's not a tygon bar.

It sounds like it is just infected. I've had some issues with my navel piercing too over the years so I hear ya on this one. If not already, try to wear loose clothing so the piercing can breath, wash with an alcohol-free anti-septic wash 2-3x a day with a q-tip. Allow to dry fully so no unnecessary bacteria grows. You can also make a warm sea salt solution and soak a cotton ball to place on the piercing for 5-10 minutes. (To make the solution it is equal parts,1 part salt to 1 part water) The only other thing I can suggest is Tea Tree Oil 2x a day or icing the area for 10-15 minutes at a time to decrease an inflammation that might be happening. Good Luck! Hope everything turns out ok!

That looks infected. It also looks like it is rejecting.

Do not remove the piercing while it is infected. If you remove it the ends heal up trapping the infection and creating an abscess.

After the infection clears up it may then be worth removing the piercing as it looks like it will eventually reject. Check with a piercer before removing.

It might be infected, although if it was infected chances are it would of developed puss. The best way i have found to get rid of infected piercings is to clean it three times a day with either piercing spray, tea tree oil or rock salt diluted down in water. Rejection is very common with surface piercings, which is something you probably knew befor getting the piercing. I dont think there is a way to stop it from rejecting unfortunately. It is very important that you dont touch or move the piercing except when cleaning it. I hope the piercing works out for you (:

I agree with the comments at the bottom of the page, it looks like it's rejecting and should never have been done with a straight bar. Take it out, or get a decent piercer to take it out, and then look after it as others have suggested.

Well it doesn't look normal especially after 4 weeks. Its hard to tell from the pictures if its rejecting or if its infected. You should go see the person that did the piercing, they will be able to tell you, you may have to have it removed. Good luck.
