If Lord Bagel Cat takes it every day and thinks he/she/it is not addicted, all they have to do is quit taking it and see what happens. I don't recommend this because abruptly quitting any benzo can cause seizures....

To answer your question - addiction is not something that suddenly happens overnight. Valium causes changes to your brain chemistry every time you take it, and this is a cumulative change. Soon you start to develop tolerance, where you have to take more to get the same effect. After a while you start to develop dependency, where if you don't take it you feel sick, anxious, and have sleeping problems. Eventually you absolutely have to keep taking it because you can have seizures if you quit, and if you don't have seizures you will suffer severe withdrawals.

How soon does this happen? It is different for everyone, and depends on how much you take and how often. One week at high dosages is enough for you to feel sick and anxious when you quit, but this quickly passes. The long you take it, the worse you feel when you quit and the longer it lasts. Recovery from long term benzo usage can take over a year.

Addiction occurs when you realize you can't stop taking it.

I agree with Bork - it doesn't take very long at all for your body to become dependent on valim. I am a pharmacy tech and we advise 2 weeks use max, and if possible, just when absolutely required rather than regular doses of it, which your body gets used to.
