First time karaoke host needs help!?

Okay, so here's the deal. I'm a freaking bartender, and I can't carry a tune to save my life... but our karaoke person was fired, and the owner of the bar seems to think I will be great to take over the position temporarily. I just found this out, and I have to start TOMORROW NIGHT. I don't have a clue what I'm doing, it's a little small bar without many customers, but karaoke nights pull in more than just the regulars. I'm funny when I banter with someone, but I don't know how to get the crowd going. I don't know what to say to start the night off, I don't know if I will be nervous, but I work at this bar, so I want to make a good impression because 3 nights a week I serve these people their drinks. I need tips, jokes, things to say, etc! Please please please help me. This is only temporary, but it's probably going to last a few weeks, so I need massive amounts of help! Thanks! And please don't be rude because I can't sing so I won't. I told the owner that before he said he wanted me to take over.

Just relax and keep in mind that the karaoke singers come there to sing and not to be entertained by the karaoke host. It's the job of the karaoke host to help the crowd entertain themselves. Focus on running a fair singer rotation and adjust the music to microphone mix to make each singer sound as good as possible. You don't have to sing at all if you wait until two or three singers turn in song requests. Let the crowd do all the singing. Remember, the more time you spend jabbering between songs the less time singers have to sing.

First off is to relax and determine to have a fun time no matter what. This is karaoke not a make or break career change. If you don't think you can sing that well the main thing is to try anyways and tell the patrons that if they can do better so us. Pick a song most people will sing along with and get someone to sing it. Friends in Low places is really good since most people can at least sing the chours. Ask someone to volunter to help you sing a song, mabe another girl to do a girl song like We are Family or a guy to help sing I've got you Babe (Sonny and Cher). People who would not sing alone will often sing in a group so ask people to get a friend or two to sing with them. What kind of bar is this, is it a country or rock or college hang out, get that kind of music going and even play just regular dance music for a break. Do whatever you fell can be done since there is no exact way to run a karaoke show except for the basic rotation. You might give away a free drink for the first singer or two to sing. Have fun.
