With regard to the American flag, is it true it must not ever touch the ground?

I've always heard that you must not let the American flag touch the ground, and if it does you must burn it. Is this just an old tale, a common misconception, or the truth? Thank you in advance :)!

You don't let it touch the ground, but if it should by accident touch the ground you don't have to burn it.

When it becomes too shabby to display you can return them to a Veterans group and they will properly dispose of it by burning.

The flag code published by utilising the previous answerer is right, whether it does under no circumstances mean it is sweet to burn your flag because of the fact it touched the floor. A flag would desire to purely be burned whether it somewhat is torn, tattered, or grimy as a fashion to be in many cases irreparable, because of the fact flying it in such situation under any widespread circumstances could symbolize disrespect to the flag. previous that, you will desire to constantly endeavour to appreciate the flag and not in any respect drag it alongside the floor or pass away it on the floor in view it somewhat is likewise disrespectful. consequently you will desire to objective to no longer enable it touch the floor, yet whilst it happens by possibility it is no longer some invisible stain on the flag's honor, and it does no longer require it to be burnt. apart from there is actual no foundation to declare that purely veterans are allowed to burn a flag. appreciate for the flag belongs to all electorate.

Now that you know it is in fact true, also know that its illegal. Its also illegal for a flag to be raised in the dark, that's why you'll always see people either having a light on their flags at night time or taking it down at sunset.

Yes it is true that the flag must never touch the ground. It is considered an act of disrespect to the flag.

When old flags are retired they are burned in a formal ceremony with honor guard.
