Transmission problems please help?
I have a 97 nissan pickup stick shift, i was at a stop light and when i went to put it in gear my shifter just went around all the gears, it wouldnt let me try to put it in any gear, does this mean my transmission is shot, or is it something else, ive heard a couple different things of what it could be (flywheel, forks, ball joint) unfortunately the two people that told me those things arent mechanics. Im taking it to the shop 2morrow, i just want to have an idea of what it is before i do so i dont get ripped off.

What do you mean by "it wouldn't let me try to put it in any gear"? Do you mean that it wants to go into gear, and doesn't let you, or the shifter just moves freely about?
If the shifter moves freely about (around its designated area - the floor - and doesn't feel like it is engaging anything - almost as if you no transmission), then something may have come loose, broken off, or just slipped out of the shift linkage (between shifter and tranny).
If it wants to engage, and doesn't let you, it could be your tranny. I'm sorry, I don't believe this BS about it possibly being the flywheel, clutch fork, or ball joint as this would just give you a nice grinding in the tranny since the the clutch/pressure plate wouldn't completely disengage from the engine.

That sounds like a shift linkage issue. It is all internal but can disintegrate. I had that happen in my grand fathers truck, a 90 Toyota pickup. The rubber grommet bellow the shifter. Once that was replaced, it could be shifted again.

It might be an easy fix. It requires removing the shift boot and taking the 4 bolts out under the boot. The problem might be that some or all of these bolts have backed out and need tightening, or the lower end of the shift lever may have a problem.
