rational explanations anyone?

Earlier this afternoon, I heard a great commotion at the front door, as if someone was trying to enter. My wife heard it too. The dogs started barking and continued to bark for several minutes. I went to check, and no one was near my door, no driving cars, nothing. A minute later I heard the upstairs fan go on, with one of the blades on the floor. Rational explanations anyone. No "its my imagination" type nonsense either. Could a small earthquake or something cause this, without affecting anything else? I wouldn't like to think a visitor is here, or if it was, hoping that it moved on directly. Nothing else has happened since this.

Update:

lol @ its my imagination. Do my wife and My two dogs and I all have the same imagination?

run..? No way, I don't run from the paranormal, if that is what it was.

    No Idea.

You infer that it took you several minutes to go to the door. Really? That is a long time to not investigate "a great commotion".

Where do you live? City? Suburbs? Rural? What is around your front door? Do you have a screen door?

    Wind?

    A raccoon?

    Birds fighting?

I can't understand what you are saying about the fan. It is surprising that it went on? Or that a blade was missing? or both?

Why do you think the two incidents are related? Coincidences happen way more than you think.

There are many small earthquakes every day, every where. It could be that. Chance are you will never know. It might pay to check your house out. A woman in England found out she had kids hanging out in her attic for years...and she never knew. She just put down all the strange noises and moved items to her imagination.

Beats me. Why ask a bunch of strangers on the internet who have probably never set foot in your house? Why not ask somebody who actually knows your house and neighborhood better?

In any case, conclusions like "Oh it must be that people's consciousnesses are metaphysical and transcend the body after death and yet are able to cause physical mischief" sure aren't rational.

The last time something similar happened to me, it was in fact, an earthquake.

Hm. That does seem difficult to explain rationally.
