I'm trying to understand the phrase "YOU GUY'S" or "GUY'S", why do people say it?
is stated quite often everywhere. Is this instead of saying the persons/peoples name or what is it replacing? I find it said even when referring to ladies...what's up with this word? I find it annoying &
just wondered the concept of stating this. Is it laziness/not remembering a persons name or the latest slang?

If it isn't bad enough that people use the English language poorly,, now people have to use slang poorly as well !! ... The word "Guy", comes from the 1920's era & is a slang word for a Man. It has been used for decades with this meaning being exclusively meant as a "Man" (or humam male). To call a Woman a "Guy", is insulting, or at best, sheer laziness. ......... Later on in the 1970's, homosexual males 'hijacked' the word "Gay" & placed it in front of the word "Guy" to form the phrase "Gay Guy". This was to replace the derrogatory terms for an homosexual man that were in use at the time. ... Again,, it referred ONLY to Males, but this time Only homosexual males. (homosexual Women have always been called Lesbians, a word which is not derrogatory at all.) ... By the early 1980's the word "Guy" had been dropped from the phrase, or perhaps was reclaimed by Hetero Men as being theirs,, maybe both.. ... So from then on the word "Gay" meant "homosexual male, Not "Happy & Joyfull" as it really means, & the word "Guy" once again came to be slang for any Man. ...... Women started to be included in this word too, after Germaine Greer & the Women's Liberation movement had began to convince people that Women & Men were the Same. .. "Guys" used in the context of a group of women or a mixed group, is meant to say "Men" & Women who are the same as Men." ...... The placing of the word "You" in front of "Guys",,, is no more than Bad Grammar, even for slang!!

Where I come from, it's usually sort of "slang". It's not not remembering someone's name, it's just how we like to talk. Yep, we do call the ladies "guys"; it kind of means "friends". You'd only say that to people you know well. It is very informal spoken language.

it is an informal expression spoken by females, dating back to I guess the 40's and 50s. Probably from gangster type movies and TV shows. Just a guess maybe James Cagney or Marlon Brando quote.

The lastest slang??? Where have you been? People have been using casual expressions for decades. This one would be called a colloquialism.
I agree with you that it is annoying, but I feel it is more juvenile. When you get to a certain age, you should be correct in your grammar and speech. I'm in my forties and I'm trying to get out of the habit of that teen catch-word "like". Like, what am I going to do? Like, who's going to be there? Like, that is so weird. I HATE myself for like saying that like every five minutes, like you know what I mean. Like, it's so annoying, like why do people do it. Like seriously, guys?
Just kidding around with you. You'll probably get a lot of annoyed answers, people saying it's no big deal. It isn't but if you want to speak in a more grown-up way, I really dig that man (sorry again!)
It's not laziness, it's a cultural thing, it's just a trend, one very long trend that will never go out of fashion, unfortunately.

You see English is a language,a tool made by humans-for humans. We decide what words it has,we add new words everyday,English follow's our rules, not we follow English's rules.
It's called being chilled in life, relaxing, evolving.
A rolling stone gather's no moss...And evolving language stays alive.
Why do you old languages have died out.Because they did not evolve.

"Guys" used in a phrase is referring to multiple people, male or female. "Guys" can also describe males (ex. guys/girls) But when people say, "You guys" for example, they are trying to get the attention to a group of people, male or female, in one setting.
