I have never seen so many uninformed stupid answers in my life. I must have asked this question on stupid answers day on Y/A. Not one person attempted to give an informed answer.

It was about a cover up, that is for sure.
Nobody but Nixon really knew what was covered up, and why he struggled so hard to cover it up.
The movie Nixon suggested that the work of "The Plumbers", and/or covert actions of the CIA were at the heart of the things being covered up during the conspiracy to coverup Watergate.

No, it was about the paranoia of Nixon and those he surrounded himself with. However it is fascinating to note that through that 10 year period in history you find the same players popping up again and again in the scandals.
