I've got questions on my refrigerator.?

Just wondering if 'Polar Bear' could confirm my suspicions. I've got a Kenmore fridge mod# 106.8690383, it's not equipped with the defrost heater. The freezer is working fine, but everything in the fridge section freezes, the freezer is on it's coldest setting and the fridge is set almost on its warmest setting, the air ducts between freezer and fridge are clear and clean, the door to adj the fridge temp works very easy. Every spring I unplug the unit and blow all the dust from the coils. The unit runs constantly. I'm suspecting the thermostat isn't registering that the temp is satisfied and trying to keep cooling. Polar Bear, do you think I'm on the right track? I know that two heads ARE better than one!

Update:

The timer for the defrost has the wires for the heater, but there ain't no heaters. The schematic shows them but the unit isn't equipped with them. The fridge is 23yo, so? I'm 44yo and I ain't getting replaced! $46 for a thermostat vs $650 for a GOOD, NEW fridge, you do the math.

I routinely lubricate the door seals (Son of a Gun), as hot as it gets in my kitchen I don't really have a choice

The question is NOT the Defroster system for the fridge (It does have one, by the way) The problem is that it sounds as if your door seal is dried out, or cracked or broken, thus letting air in to create the dampness that the cold temp in fridge causes to freeze; or the small drain that transfers the condensate moisture out ot the fridge is stopped up and the condensate keeps freezing and building up because it can't drain.

You do have a defrost heater but the defrost system doesn't seem to be the problem. When I read through your description a couple of possibilities came to mind:

    1. Cold control not shutting off. If the cold control (thermostat) is stuck closed it can cause this problem.

    2. Stuck or broken damper. This model has a damper to direct more or less air into the refrigerator compartment. If that device is stuck open, too much cold air will go into the fridge compartment. See the part here http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Damper/2160...

Also, setting the freezer to the coldest setting may be hurting. Try backing that down to a middle setting instead.

First off, your fridge does have a defrost heater (see link) though if you aren't seeing any frost or ice build-up, you don't have a defrost issue. It could very well be the thermostat, though you might want to set your freezer control a little lower (higher temp) The thermostat registers the freezer temp & the fridge control is just an air dampener. My question is, since this is a 23 year old fridge, how much money do you want to sink into it?
