Race car driving is not a sport that has caught on in the black community therefore there are less black people who are even interested in participating in this sport. Im black and have never seen a race nor do I know anyone who watches it either. Secondly I would imagine that since participating in this sport involves a bit more money that most other sports it might be harder for an outsider ( black person) to break in. Just as it is harder for females in racing. You need sponsors and all that and to become good you need pratice car and track time and yada yada. Many blacks probably would find it very difficult to access these things! Hope this helped

I'm black and I could tell you why. Racing isn't really that big in the African American community. They are more into other sports. It's a rarity you find someone that's the same race as me that is interested in racing. They'll gladly watch it but they are not willing to participate in it. That goes along with any race also. On top of that, if you don't have the money to get started, your screwed and that's clear across the board whether your black or any other race. If you look at all the racers, they come from well to do families. The blacks that do make it to NASCAR as well as a couple of non-black drivers can't even get sponsors while folks like Danica get it hand over fist. I was going to put Dale on there bit he's actually doing really well this year despite no wins yet.

It appears black drivers are not seen as much because black people aren't as interested in going fast. There is a new driver in NASCAR, a black kid and he is really good! Also a black girl in ARCA racing that will more than likely end up in NASCAR. She's still learning and getting experience. There were some black men racing in the 1950s and 1960s in NASCAR too. There were women in NASCAR in the 1960s and 1970s.

There are probably a lot of reasons, and arguments pro and con for each. But one thing to keep in mind is that the best race driver in the world, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, is black.

    Lewis Hamilton is half black.

He is also currently the best driver in F1.

Not necessarily the best driver in the world.

    That said..

One theory for the lack of black participation, is exposure to the sport.

If as young people they do not attend races, it's easy to see why there

    is little or no interest.

you tend toget interested in things that you have exposure to.

There probably aren't many young black people that aspire to be like a Jimmie Johnson.

But more that may like to follow the path of a Lebron James.

That's like asking why are there not many black hockey players in the NHL or black heavy metal guitarists. You can't force people into doing what they don't want to do. And you shouldn't. And why is no one concerned that there are no Japanese drivers or Eskimo drivers. You make it sound like black people are special needs citizens, when in reality they are no different than anyone else.

I am guessing that with the sport being so expensive to get into, the blacks that did have money, spent in on other things, rather than on race cars..

If you can qualify you can race. Black or not.

I'm not sure exactly why other than there just aren't, why aren't there more whites in high level track and field in the 100 yard dash----because there just aren't, there are a number of events globally that you can look at and ask a similar question

It has nothing to do with money. The idea that blacks don't have money is a racists stereotype. We have a lot more than a lot of white people. We have better cars, houses, televisions, beds, etc... than a lot of white people. There's a lot of white people who don't make it in the sport also so it's not racial reasons that prevent us blacks from entering the sport. We would rather race motorcycles.
