I am still a little confused at your question? I volunteer at my local vets office, and at first I thought you were talking about the kind they put actually IN an animal to hold a bone in place while it heals. Pens as in a run around little fenced of area in a circle about 10-20 feet in diameter? They are used to contain healing patients, or to supervise puppies or kittens. Sorry I'm not getting exactly what your asking, but I hope I helped.

Umm .. to write with?
ADD: To confine the animal while recovering from surgery/treatment or to house the animal while awaiting for the aforementioned.

The writing utensil or the thing you put things in to keep them in one place. Either way there's your answer.
