What does it mean when someone "pokes" you on Facebook?

My sister keeps poking me and we never speak to each other, despite living in the same town. It's been like this for years. She knows how to contact me. When we are face to face she treats me like I'm the last person on earth she'd like to talk to. She basically treats me like ****. So what does this poking mean?

Update:

Smart_Guy: Facebook isn't poking, my sister is. It's a rottweiler.

It is kind an initiative to start a conversation or break the ice. May be the way is not very appealing to some but still people expect after doing so
