How does one follow the teachings of Buddha and keep up with todays standards of living?
Do I have to go to a monastery and live up in the hills? Or can I stay put and still follow Buddha's teachings?
@SupaStar
I don't remember buddhism ever promoting slavery. All I know and hear is promoting good, and happiness throughout the world, for the better of mankind.
Not sure how christianity and buddhism relate. (Morally)

You can follow the teachings of the Buddha and maintain a certain lifestyle . . . if you understand *why* you are maintaining that lifestyle.
If your lifestyle serves only your own desires, ideas, and beliefs, then you are not following the teachings of the Buddha.
If your lifestyle helps all people, including yourself, gain freedom from suffering and the causes of suffering, then your lifestyle follows the teachings of the Buddha.
One Zen master always used to ask his students: Why do you get out of bed every day? Why do you eat breakfast? Why did you come here? These are good questions for all of us.
Another Zen master was a real estate developer before his retirement and made a lot of money. But he put that money to work building Zen centers in North America and Europe, thus helping many people.
You do not need to live in a monastery to follow Buddhism. But you do need to be willing to examine the choices you make.
Best wishes on your journey!

Well, you COULD do what Christians do when they "follow the teachings of God and keep up with todays standards of living"...
Lie or ignore what the standards of God are.
You know:
When God says you must execute non-virgins on her wedding night? Ignore that.
When God says slavery is ok? Lie and say he did not.

My comparison is not between the moral lessons of the two religions, it is instead (as is OBVIOUS from my answer) that the answer to your question
"How does one follow the teachings of Buddha and keep up with todays standards of living?"
is to
"Lie or ignore what the standards of [insert religious tenets here] are."

Moderation is the key. Don't become attached to your possessions or let them define you. You can be a Buddhist living in the world.

Live moderately...example, be happy with a mobile phone, you don't need the latest iphone.
