Walking from amtrak to rittenhouse square? Philly? ?

A friend and I were thinking of taking the amtrak from Wilmington, DE to the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. We would like to walk to Rittenhouse Square (about a mile) but I'm not sure if this is safe. Googlemaps makes it look like we have to cross a highway and a bridge. Has anyone done this route, and do you think it is safe to walk?

The highway, the Schuylkill Expressway, is under the surface streets at that point. You would walk across a bridge over the Schuylkill River. It is safe and many people walk that route from Penn and Drexel to Center City.

I would suggest instead of Amtrak, take SEPTA. It leaves from the same station in Wilmington. However you can take it to Suburban Station which is a much shorter walk to Rittenhouse Square.

To answer your question, the walk from Amtrak to Rittenhouse Square is safe and a popular pedestrian route. From 30th St, I prefer to walk east on Market St. to 19th St, and then turn right (south) on 19th St for about 4 blocks to Walnut St. and Rittenhouse Sq. Park.

The walk from 30th St Station (Amtrak) is approx 20 minutes. The walk from Suburban Station (SEPTA) is approx. 10 minutes. And please note that the SEPTA train also stops at the 30th St station, too.

However, if you are not familiar with Philly or just getting around in a big city, then I would suggest catching a cab from 30th St. The cab ride would be about 5 minutes and $7. Taxi cabs are also easy to catch from Rittenhouse back to the station.

FYI: There are great restaurants on The Square. My favorites: Marathon on the Square, Porcini's (Italian BYOB) and The Village Whiskey (awesome burgers).
