how to warn references they will be contacted?

Lets say you applied somewhere and you got an interview and the employer asks for references. When you go to warn the references to expect a call, what do you say to them? If contacting them by email, what do I put in the subject heading, and body?

Call them up immediately. ASK them if they would be a job reference or a character reference for you. If their answer isn't an immediate and enthusiastic 'yes' then don't use them, or else have a friend call them up (acting like an employer) and ask some questions about you. If they aren't saying good things, don't use them.
