What's the difference between "I never thought" and "I've never thought"?

    "I never thought" indicates a single incident: "I never thought he would actually steal that car."

    "I've never thought" indicates an ongoing process: "I've never thought that those UFO films were real."

    I never thought I would ever do that.

    I've never thought about it, so I don't know.

    That's my idea of the difference.
