Does the liver heal over time after a person has stopped drinking?

I drank like a fish for three yrs and am just now getting off the stuff. What do I need to do to repair the liver and how long does it take to heal?

Update:

The Doc sez I've used up most of my "backup", but I'm not terminal by any means. He wants to do a biopsy and ultrasound and I have no coverage for that. My best bet is to quit. So I need input on anything else I can do to improve things.

The Liver is remarkable in it's ability to repair/regenerate it's self, however if cirrhosis has set in, the affected areas will not mend or regenerate completely.

Your doctor can actually do blood work on you to determine how well your liver functions. See him and ask him to test you.

The liver does regenerate after time.

There is nothing you can do to help the process, the liver just does it on it's own.

3 years of drinking isn't going to cause any serious damage to the liver, it's going to cause other health problems before causing serious liver cirrhosis.

Becoming a non-drinker is a great thing to do for your health.

    Hey Deacon:

My aunt was a heavy drinker for many years. Her doctor warned her that she had to stop. She tried repeatedly for years and kept slipping back into it. By the time she finally got it together to not drink, the damage had been done, and it was too late. She died 6 months later at 48 years old.

There is something that you can do to help the process. Eat healthy foods and exercise. You want to optimize your health however you can. I'm diabetic and can't drink. I got a medical marijuana license and have a few puffs of pot instead. It works for me.
