Why is do people act without grace or civility anymore?

I admittedly love to discuss a wide variety of topics here on Yahoo! Answers.

But what sadden's me, is that people can't disagree with one another without using vulgarity or cursing.

How can we earn each other's respect, if we can't respect our differences.

If we can't communicate with grace and civility, to show that we can get along even if we disagree.

Voltaire said it best.

"I may disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

I am not expecting people to be perfect or not real, but isn't all this angry divisiveness a sign that our culture has lost touch with those common bonds that unite and unify us?

Is there no room to acknowledge our mutual respect and love and kindness?

Thank you for listening to my weird question :)

Update:

FYI, I am a 49 year old man :) Thank you for your good answers. I think this is what sadden's me about our modern era. And why can't we make this a more friendly and polite world? I suggest/urge that all of us in the next week, try harder to be friendlier and more polite!! We can change the world if we work at it. Imagine a better world, then go do it!

Have I got a quote for you, from **** My Dad Says! "The future leaders of your country are gonna be people that have absolutely no experience with actual confrontation. Thirty years from now the President of the most powerful country in the world is going to be some little **** who sat at his computer and hurled insults three feet away from his mommy's tit like it was no big deal. I don't condone fighting, but when a human being understands that his or her actions might result in a giant fist up his or her ***, he or she learns a thing or two about thinking before they speak."

We have lost the connection between civility as a means of avoiding punishment, because no one can beat you up through the internet. We have also lost sight of people as multifaceted humans. Instead, we see only the side of the argument they present, and that makes us angry because we don't see any kind of mitigating human factors.

    Interesting question, though!

I have a hard time being civil if someone is uncivil to me. I try hard, but I never do it first. I'm not civil to trolls on Y!A and people who post sick racist questions. Sorry, but I do lose it when people are just being mean, obnoxious and uncivil. In real life it's the same. I am civil, but not if someone is being uncivil to me first. I may disagree with someone, but that is never cause for incivility. It's not a weird question. I hate it when I lose my civility. It's hard to be civil when others are not. You are a bigger person than I, if you can stay civil in the face of incivility. Someone has to start it and I normally don't, but I also don't stop myself from telling off jerks who would do or act evil. People also say evil things. I want to kill all "---------", (fill in the blank). I hope you see my meaning and I'm near your age. I would hope I act like an adult, since the average age on here is probably sixteen. I usually like to help kids and give advice. I do have a tendency to tell off Trolls. It is easy to hide behind a computer screen. It's never okay to tell off someone because they have a different opinion. It's the Internet and lack of family and values in this day and age that cause incivility.

For the most part grace and civility has become a symbol of weakness. People prefer to bludgeon each other over the head instead of seeking a mutual agreement because it takes less effort and thought.

You'll find most people to be more civil in person. With the anonymity of the internet people brazenly voice their opinions without regard. Such is the world we live in.

I know what you mean, I had to block people from sending me E-mails from here because they couldn't discuss an issue in a civil manner.

Makes me kinda ask your self what took place to that first guy... Do you assume his pals stoned him to dying for insulting them? quite, i do no longer see why we could hurl the two stones OR insults, or how hurling insults makes us "civilized". it style of feels to me that "civilized" human beings would desire to be taught to understand one yet another, or a minimum of, to cite yet another smart guy or woman, "in case you haven't any longer something marvelous to declare, do no longer say something in any respect." i'm specific the 1st guy or woman to declare that replaced right into a mom....
