Is health care a right or privilege?

This whole dabate over health care will never be resolved until we answer that fundamental question. I think the American people are torn between someone getting a free lunch and helping people out. I have mixed feelings over health care. As much as I don't want to pay for welfare queens to get better medical care than I get, I can't see someone going bankrupt or homeless if they get into a car accident either. What does everyone think here? Please keep it civil. Thanks.

Update:

Scott B- Ok, is "Access" to health care a right or a privilege? Try answering the question.

Update 2:

. - There is nothing false about these choices. It is the choices our politicians are presenting to us. The bottom line is if health care is a product to be enjoyed like a Big Mac or is it a neccessity to ensure the security of our nation like the military? No matter what, I'm good. I have two health care insurances by my job and my wife's job. I don't even have co-pays because what one insurance doesn't cover the other will. My prescriptions are only a 10% co-pay. I'm going to be alright. I'm just curious to see how people feel about the health care debate.

Leo - I don't have a dog in this fight because as I explained to . , I'm doing better than most people I know. I do think that the health care debate is being hijacked by special interests on both sides and until the adults get control of the debate, it will be used as a bludgeon by one side against the other.

Update 3:

Jaker - Please try to understand that I'm not trying to advocate one side over the other. Please try to understand that most people can't afford private insurance unless their employers provide it for them let alone actual medical care costs. Please try to understand that all I wanted was a personal opinion, not an indictment on what you may percieve as my beliefs.

Update 4:

Still Learning - Succinct and to the point. I like your explanation.

Update 5:

WGAC - You are right. The one thing people gloss over in their arguments is that by law, hospitals have to take care of you regardless of ability to pay. Years ago, it was shown that Cook County Hospital in Chicago spent upwards of $30,000 dollars to treat a gunshot victim. The costs of that victim goes to everyone else if they can't pay. The hospitals eat the costs. Our health care system, from the hospital all the way down to the patient is broken. Until we as a country can answer whether we want a market based or a more socialist based healthcare system, or something in between, we won't get anything done and we as Americans are caught in this stalemate.

Update 6:

Update 7:

Frank - Yes, we do. It comes down to if the government, ie the taxpayer, is going to fund healthcare for all citizens or if it is the responsibility of the individual citizen to do so. Many people have health insurance but there are those that don't and when they get seriously injured or sick, the hospital is left holding the bag which means those responsible enough to have health insurance are left holding the bag.

Neither, I would say it is a personal responsibility.

Health care is not a right or a privilege !! Health care is a need - that everybody has ! It is not a question of if you will ever get sick ,it is just a matter of time -EVERYBODY WILL GET SICK ,SOONER OR LATER !!!!! illness is like death ,it is life's common denominator ! The rich, the poor, the ugly, the beautiful ,black, white, yellow ,brown and all in between GET SICK !!!!!!!When those who can't pay for their own health insurance gets sick ,those who can pay will be charged for it ,one way or the other we all will pay !(the county hospitals) If health insurance is more affordable ,more people will be able to pay for it !Some people are so worried about paying for someone Else's health care that they don't realize that they are paying for others anyway !What is it that you think is driving the price of health care so high in the first place ? Do you really think that the $5.00 tylenol is an honest price that you are being charged in the hospital ?

Who is getting a free lunch? The whole idea behind the health care bill is to INCREASE the number of people paying into the healthcare system as opposed to paying for non-covered people with their tax dollars. And please, spare me the "welfare queen" talking point. I've been hearing that ridiculous piece of rhetoric for 30 years.

The preamble to the US constitution states that one of the reasons for the founding of the country and the writing of the constitution was to "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare". How can anyone make the argument that such a statement does NOT include healthcare?

It is not granted by virtue of being human, as in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, so it must be a privilege. A right is NOT something somebody gives you by taking it from others, so it must be a privilege. BTW food is not a right or anything else that has to be taken from others.

Liberals like Sandra Fluke could pay for her own $9 a month birth control if she didn't spend the money on expensive European vacations.

Instead they want us to pay their medical costs while they play with their money.

Why would your "right" to have someone else pay for your healthcare trump the rights of the person you want to make pay? Anything that can be taken away is not really a right. And please try to understand the difference between healthcare and healthcare insurance. They are not the same thing.

healthcare is a right, but u have to buy it, it's sort of like u dont get free lunch, or free car insurance, unless if ur company pays for it then you will have to work in certain fields.
