Would You Agree That Three is the Loneliest Number?

One has options. One is independent. One can make matches and travel narrow paths. But three … three is the heartache of separated bonds when teacher tells students to pair up … being shunted to the next car of the roller coaster … a path two-abreast: a culture based on twos. Being rejected, or forced to reject. Three easily becomes lonelier than one.

Source: Three kittens trying to fit into a shoebox that only holds two.

Update:

The kittens were a memory jog. Don't base answers on kittens in a shoebox. Consider how culture pairs people off and cuts out the third wheel, the fifth wheel, the 13th wheel, no matter how strong the friendship. I'm glad some roller coasters are built for three, P'Quaint. And Lord Percy, I'm not suggesting anyone should add an extra wheel to a bicycle built for two.

Update 2:

P'Quaint" Please interpret "Teen tigada, kaam bigada!"

And Truth Sleuth, forsooth, I believe you are being naughty.

Update 3:

Hmmm. Two can also be lonelier than one, when the other is nothing but a barrier towards hitching up galoshes and plunging into life.

Update 4:

@Fredric: You are correct. I am pondering, and your argument is valid. When all relationships are broken down, it winds up as One. One of two. One of three. One of 13. One of one. We are all lonely within our shells, and mathematics and division, subtraction and addition, are irrelevant.

Update 5:

The shoebox, turned turtle, crawled around the room, a tiny tail sticking out the back. The box was bounced upon and pounced upon, leading me to laughter and this observation:

'Tho sometimes struck by melancholy,

I'm quickly cured by kitten folly.

Kitten folly and Fredric sense. Plus, they canceled the field trip to the museum today, so I don't have to worry about who my safety-buddy will be.

Update 6:

Bad luck comes with three on a match, Questor, (ready, aim, fire!), and three is a poor match, as recognized by BB, LC, Gene and Chorle. I have to be impressed by Chandler, who requires a baker's dozen to feel odd one out. Iggy, cat in a box :) !

Update 7:

James & P'Quaint, thanks for cultural perspective. I am reminded why one wife is not enough, two a gang, and three lop-sided: hence the recommendation for four wives. Three can indeed be a magic number (and I love your angles, Questor), but doesn't work for square-dancing and field trips.

Update 8:

Where is Dafuq? Do they play 8-ball there or snooker?

I disagree, The third might be the loneliest number. If you have three

and two are joined that leaves you with one, the outsider, the one rejected

the ONE.The two though feeling regret have no concern for the one. They

are more focused on the two.Actually I'm not sure you agree with your question

you're wanting to know if we agree. Not all cultures pair people off, some tribes

in New Guinea share multiple partners.Others tribes in Africa allow multiple

wives. If I consider how some cultures pair people off wouldn't I have to consider

the cultures that don't.To say three IS the loneliest number is absolute, and

I find there are to many examples to prove it isn't.Three lovers, three wives

are not as loney as One, for one is singular and it stands alone as the loneliest

The number three (3) is not a lonely number. It is the smallest number of sides a polygon could have. Two sides only makes an angle, not a triangle. In love, the third party is the outcast, or rather the preferred one-----or why should there be a filler for some inconsistencies? So, it could be the complimentary one----the one that completes. There are superstitions about the number 3, say, about three people lighting cigarettes from a lone matchstick. The number three dies. Well, this does not hold true always in most situations. Perhaps, that ill-fated number three is that person who lights his cigarette only during a certain night in the war front. As situational fact have it, when the first person lights his cigarette, the enemy spots the light in the dark and cocks his weapon, by the time the second person lights his cigarette, the enemy aims, and by the time the third fellow lights his cigarette, he fires. So far, that was the most logical explanation to it. And the only one I know with solid proof. Nice question Adeline.

my first thought was "number....number that you'll ever know" and that song is likely to be playing in my head the rest of the day.

What did Grocho say about "rode in three on a motorcycle and I was top guy" ?

there must be away to fit 3 kittens into a showbox, Noah fit two of every animal and 7 or every animal that could be sacrificed. Maybe Doctor Who is on to show how those animals could all fit on that Ark.

You would think one of those kittens felt like a third wheel?

I am imagining your kittens whisPurring in your ear to buy a pair of boots so they have a bigger box.

but you likely have a point since my cellphone plan and costco membership are base of pairs of users. The irony is Sprint calls it a family plan even if it seems priced more like two couples plans and seems to be a misnomer.

I know this from all sides for I have thought about it often. I have watched the odd one out and seen what it does. I have been a third wheel that just hindered the contraption. And as above so below is the law. what about the beyond and/or the in between.

I know. That's where the 'other things' are.White noises and a flickering of the flames.

I must think kittens, it will make this better.

Three is a much maligned number!

We say in Hindi, "Teen tigada, kaam bigada!" Hence the superstitious don't go in the group of threes on an important mission! Well, at least that was how it was in the past! They believed their work wouldn't be done!

Anyway, Trinity is considered Holy, don't forget. In Hinduism, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh (The Trinity) is said to manage this world.

Triangle in romantic relationships surely creates heartburning. Being pulled on different sides can be dangerous to limb and life ;)

But a family of Three is what we require in India...just like China...to manage our resources and...sanity!

I always felt one to be more lonely than three. However, in the area of relationships three can be problematic. This includes families with three children and, in your case, with three pets.

On a side note, I do recollect my wife's old cat, when it was a kitten, would remove all the tissues from a tissue box, climb into the box and fall asleep. In this instant one wasn't lonely, it was a little cute and funny.

I agree, with the exception of "menage a' trois",

which, by mentioning the term, in no way suggests

I'm an advocate of "3 wheeled vehicles".

I feel they're dangerous, especially when you

take into consideration the poor condition of

    many of our Interstate highways.

Threesomes aren't lonely and three kittens will fit into a shoebox because its what they want. If you got three..base life on three. Its free choice out there, there aren't any such rules.

For me, any number is a lonely number. Just depends on how people see them. In China, the word 4 in chinese rhymes with death. That's why the chinese hates the number 4.
