Sell me Chiang Mai please.?

Lots of talk on here about Bangkok & Pattaya, but very little about Chiang Mai / Rai.

I've done CM once for a mates wedding years ago but wasn't there long enough to get a feel for the place.

I'm a 36 year old, single and enjoy the gogo / disco party lifestyle.

Anyone know the social scene, prices for condo rent. is there a vibrant expat community etc.

I always head over to Thailand for the UK winter, and always get stuck in Pattaya. Seriously thinking about heading North straight from BKK this year.

Never heard a bad word about the place (but normally from couples who go up for the rest from Patts).

Is it the sort of place you are bored in after a weekend or a good fun place to spend 8 monthes?

Chiang Mai is a lot more chilled out and the way of life seems to be a lot more slower, compared to Pattaya and Bangkok. Sure, Chiang Mai does have places you can go for the bar scene, but nothing in comparison to Pattaya. There are lots of opportunities to go on day trips and excursions, such as visiting the long neck tribe, water rafting, Chiang Mai zoo, trekking, etc.

Chiang Mai is the ideal place to go to spend quality time with someone, or if you like peace and quite, or want to see and experience the northern Thailand lifestyle. So, if you enjoy your night life and visiting bars and clubs every night, like a fast paced atmosphere, etc then 5 days or so should be enough for you.

Either way, CM is definitely worth a visit, so come up here, see if you like it and if not, just head straight down to Pattaya or Bangkok.

Chiang Mai is not for everyone, but for many Chiang Mai sells its self.

There are so many things to do at a steady pace that I have called Chiang Mai home for 15 years now.

Here is some good info on living in Chiang Mai

I bet you will love it.

Chiang Mai is cheaper than Phuket! But if go-go bars and related nightlife are your thing that is much better in Bangkok or Pattaya.

Chiang Mai. Nice place to visit for a short while. Like Bangkok and Pattaya you can take tours and treks through local travel agencies. Chiang Mai has more to do in the evening than Chiang Rai. If you need a border run you can do it in a day from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.

You don't have to stay there your entire holiday. Chiang Mai is always a good place to see a little of the real Thailand. In Chiang Mai Hotel M (formerly the Montri) is not too bad. There are a few good restaurants in that area and also even a few go-go bars.

Overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is popular but get the tickets ahead of time or as soon as you hit Bangkok. Subway goes directly to Hualamphong RR station. Overnight sleeper saves you paying for another night in a hotel in Bangkok.

    Up to you.

I wouldl sell you CM if it were your scene - there is a nightlife but most people come to see the old Temples within the wall's of the City - Golden Temple in the Mountain overlooking CM - Visit near By Winter Royal Palace , Tiger Sanctuary , take a trip to beautiful Mae Hong Son , Jungle Trekking , Wild Water Rafting but not your style.

IIn your question CM is a great place to stay for 10 days but 8 Months - you should be able to see all of Thailand.

Check out Koh Phangan , home of the Full Moon Parties , near by Koh Samui ( Chaweng Beach ) or Ao Nang, Krabi , White Sand Beach , Koh Chang and why not visit Cambodia Phom Penh and Siem Reap where you money goes even futher if you like to part

I personally don't recommend Phuket as it's not the real Thailand , over crowded , over rated and to expesenive.

Pattaya is the single man's paradise , not only in SE Asia but the whole World - if you have 8 month's then base yourself there and go on trips when you feel like it.
