Came down on right knee and it locked up.?

Roughly 2 weeks ago i was playing basketball with some friends and as i came down from grabbing a rebound i landed on my right leg, and my knee stayed straight instead of bending as i came down from the jump. At first it hurt a little but i ignored it, the following days of playing basketball it wasn't hurting only a very uncomfortable feeling. The best way i can explain it is a little bit of a grinding feeling. I normally bike 15-30 miles a day and the biking didn't bother it at all and i forgot about it. That is until today when i went to play some basketball after taking a 5 day break. Then it quickly came back and i felt the grinding feeling again. Any ideas on what i can do to fix this?

    Hey,

I'm sorry to hear about your knee injury. Knee injuries can be serious and there's slot on the knee that can be hurt and cause pain ranging from a sprain to torn cartilage or ligaments.

The way you landed with your knee locked not straight, is a common cause of ACL tears. Don't freak out; I doubt you tore your ACL. ACL tears are painful, can pop or snap when it's torn, swell immediately, and cause your knee to give way.

Anyway, the grinding really isn't good and can be indicating that something's wrong.

I suggest you go get your knee checked out just to be sure. I highly recommend you see an orthopedist (bone and joint specialist). They specialize in this area and will provide the best/most help. Skip the family doc if you can; they won't do much except maybe x-ray the knee. The x-ray will only show damage to the bones not any of the soft tissue, ligaments, tendons, or cartilage IF there is any. And of the doc thinks your knee needs to be looked at further, they'll refer you to an orthopedist anyway. So, skip that step if you can and see the orthopedist.

I'm sorry I can't really give you suggestions to possible injuries. The only symptom your having is the pain and grinding and it's hard to pinpoint an injruy based off of that.

I would definitely go get it checked out though with an orthopedist if possible.

I hope I provided you with some help.

Good luck with your knee! I hope it's not too serious.
