Which routine is better for gaining muscle mass?

Going every other day and training chest

arms back shoulders in one workout

Or

Going everyday but training chest one day, arms the next, etc.

I have been doing the first option for a long time. It works but would the other one be better?

    The second option (targeted muscle groups on different days) will be far more effective in building muscle mass. Use heavy weights and work targeted muscle groups to exhaustion. Exercise with intensity. Be safe, but push yourself to your edge. You should be tired and sore (not in pain, but sore) when done. Then let that muscle group recover and work other muscle groups other days.

    I do back day, chest/shoulders day, arms day, legs/abs day. On the other three days a week I do yoga, pilates, cycle class or running. I've enjoyed great results with this.

    I think the second one is most likely right. If you do the same workout each day then you tear down the muscles without giving them a chance to recover.
