Do horses feel pain when being shoed?
My kid asked me this today, and I really have no idea. I'm not really a horse person. She was quite concerned that they get hurt when being shoed.

No it doesn't hurt them at all. Their hoves are just like big toe nails, so when a horse gets shoed its just like us getting a manicure :)

if it hurt, there's no way people would be able to keep doing it every 8 weeks.
horses don't put up with pain very much or very well (just ask anyone who tried to ride a horse with a bad fitting saddle) :-)
Horse hooves are like your nails. It's like when you clip your fingernails and toe nails, there's no pain either. because you're clipping the part that doesn't have feeling in it (nerves/blood vessels)
That said... if the farrier (person who shoes horses) does a bad job and cuts too much of the hoof off (he's got to trim it to level it for the shoe).... then yes, he can cause pain and actually bleeding too.
But the nails usually go through the hoof sides and out the sides...and are not painful.
The feeling of getting the nails hammered in, though, can bother some horses if they're not trained well to ignore the feeling. It's not pain though, as long as the nails are put in the correct way and the correct places.

If the shoes are properly attached to the hoof in the proper place it won't hurt them! Thick of the hoof like a big nail. When horses get upset about getting their feet done, it's mainly because of the pressure felt on the hoof wall, the noise of the hammer and nails, or the smell if they are being hot-shod (a hot shoe put directly onto the hoof...smells like burning hair)!
So in general terms, no, shoes don't hurt. If the nail is pounded in wrong it can case pain, but with a proper farrier, that doesn't happen!

It doesn't hurt them; it may be a little discomforting, that or a little unsettling if it's the horse's first time, but not painful. Now if you strike them in the soft region it will hurt like hell, imagine someone jabbing a needle in the skin under a nail. Other than that it doesn't even phase them; I watched my grandparents do it to their horses.

No, they do not. Hooves are just like toenails. The only sensitive area of the hoof is the frog area, which is the middle of the hoof, and it never comes in contact with a shoe.

I think it feels good. My horse practically falls asleep when having his hooves done.

Not if it's done right. Its just like clipping your toe nails, it doesn't hurt unless you cut them too short.

if it is done right it will not hurt them i should never recoment that if you have never done it and dont have a trained professional around to not do it your self yes it is like toe nails but in the middle it is tender and if you strike that you will go flying
