Abrahamic Theists: How does your holy book account for Neanderthals?
According to the creation story, God created the Universe, the Earth, the animals and then modern man...Adam and Eve. How do you account for Neanderthals? There is sufficiant evidence for their existance, so how could they exist before Adam and Eve if A&E were the first humanoids?

It doesn't. It doesn't account for redshifted galaxies, dinosaurs, pulsars, the speed of light, the speed of sound, or our ape-ancestors either, or anything beyond what humans knew and thought to know back then.

It sounds like a fair question to me, so I'll take a stab at it.
The Bible makes no mention of "neanderthals." To "assume" that Adam and Eve descended from a lower life form, is to not believe the Bible. You cannot believe the Bible is the true, inerrant Word of God and also believe that human beings "evolved" from a lower life form when the Bible specifically and unequivocally says Adam and Eve were created after everything else on earth was.
That being said, there are a couple of Biblical possibilities (that I can think of) that would support the prior existence of neanderthals. The first is that the "old earth" theory is possibly true in some way, shape or form. The Old Earth theory suggests that the earth was basically transformed at the time of creation, but had been created long before. Idk if the Bible totally supports the theory or not as I have never studied the issue in detail and don't really care to.
The second possibility (that I can think of) is that your apparent assumption that man "evolved" from neanderthals is a false or incorrect assumption. While common DNA (scientifically speaking) COULD be an indication that man evolved from another life form, it COULD also be an indication that all life forms sharing the same DNA were created by a common designer working from the same original blueprint, which is what DNA basically is anyway as I understand it. It would be similar to a car designer making similar looking cars with a different engine or color or peripherals under the hood. Considering the lack of fossils indicating transitional species from fish, to mammals to birds-for one example, this is what I consider to be the more likely possibility and appears to be a sound one according to Scripture.
Another reason this seems to be the more likely possibility is that the Bible specifically says that man was created in many ways to be like God. We can infer from many places in Scripture that man shares many of God's ways (not all, obviously, nor do we have his power). But, God's range of emotions appear to be strikingly similar our own. It's not unreasonable to think that just as God designs things a certain way that humans would possibly/likely design things similar to the way God would or may-by using blueprints.

Descendants of Cain... It is clear from the text that there were fully two human races prior to the flood. One modern humans. the other Neanderthal.

If the Abrahamic mythology sounds weird, you should see what the Ancient Alien guys do with it.
"It's possible," and they always stress that word - possible, "that the Annunaki created the Garden of Eden as an experimental dome in which they genetically altered humans into their current developmental stage."
Frankly, I'm not sure which one is weirder.

The bible doesn't say Adam and Eve were the only homonids, Christians generally consider the other homonids to be man-like but not having a soul
