Christians, does God really change his views to suit human culture?

A long time ago, Christians believed it was OK to have slaves, as long as you treated them well.

A long time ago, Christians believed God said they should not eat shellfish or bacon.

A long time ago, Christians believed homosexual activities were completely unacceptable to God.

Surely, if God really felt that way, he still does?

Isn't he eternal and unchanging? And who has heard from him lately to suggest that he's relaxed the rules?

God does not change to suit sinful humans.

Christians didn't exist until there was Christ, so the questions don't pertain to Christians. What you're referring to was thousands of years before Christ.

It was not ok to have slaves. There were servants which were freed every 7 years. That's not what we see as slaves. Many nation's people voluntarily became servants to Israel.

Yes, the Old Testament dietary laws forbad shellfish and pork.

Homosexual activities is forbidden at all times. Still is.

God doesn't change, so we don't need some new revelation, and He hasn't relaxed the rules.

It's fairly well-established fact that man made God in his own image... not the other way around.

When reading the Old Testament, isn't it convenient that God hated all the same people the Israelites hated?

... and moving on to today. Just yesterday we had two different users here claiming that secular music was a "sin", even though there's absolutely no Biblical reference for such a claim. However, if someone was to write a new book of the Bible today, I can imagine that the personal likes and dislikes of whoever wrote it would suddenly become scripture. (Case in point: Joseph Smith Jr. with most of his Doctrine and Covenants)

    >> UPDATE: I have to agree with 'Lady's Man'. Anthony D's claim is that he alone can see that God never changes and that it's all the "other people" who mess things up (which doesn't include himself, obviously). That's pretty arrogant. It is also called Special Pleading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_pleading

So, let me ask you a question Anthony D -- If people's understanding of God is flawed as you say, by what authority do you know what God's true nature is, UNLESS you are making the also making the claim that YOUR understanding of God's true nature isn't flawed like everyone else?

In response to Anthony D how would you know? It is funny to me on how whenever we mess up on things its our fault, but when you point out that "god" said to do those things now our understanding of him is wrong and that is our fault again. Logic is not a strong suit is it?

    "Isn't he eternal and unchanging?"

Yes he is, but our understanding of him isn't. In particular, EVERY age tries to make him fit in with their cultural presuppositions, but that is our fault, not God's.

@Lady's man: And a knowledge of human nature isn't your strong suit, is it?
