My wife and I want a baby, but don't have insurance?
Hi Everyone,
I'm currently an American Citizen living and working in South Korea. My wife is currently undergoing the visa paperwork to become an American Citizen. We are returning to America in March 2013. At the moment, we have no American health care coverage. We want to start trying to have a baby in October of 2012 (giving birth in July 2013). However, we won't have any medical insurance.
Should we start trying to get American Health Care even though we live outside of the US borders? What options do we have for coverage if we wait until we get to America? Please advise....
Thank you!

The new Health Care Reform act could make a big difference for you. For one thing, it says that insurance companies can't refuse to cover you for a preexisting condition. That is, if you got a job with insurance when you came back, your wife's pregnancy might be covered (depending on when that part of the law kicks in. Some insurance companies have already started doing it). Another provision of the law is that people making less than 133% of the federal poverty level would be enrolled in Medicaid. However, that's the one provision that the Supreme Court said the federal government couldn't do. So it depends what state you'd be living in. If you have no income at all, you can qualify for Medicaid or whatever the state program is.
Try to move to Massachusetts. Mitt Romney got a very good health care program in there when he was governor- exactly like the new federal program that he now hates.
And go see your Planned Parenthood office when you get back. They can give you all the information on what's available in your state.
My daughter was in a similar situation- she had been working overseas and married someone there. She came back and had the baby, and there were no charges.

you're literally not precisely nicely proper. The $12K isn't a some distance off guessimation. The $three hundred deductible is absolute - so long because it applies to hospitalization merely. There will be separate additonal ones for medical doctors. Co-insurance and out of pocket dollar quantities are calculated depending on the decreased in length cost. that is the pre-agreed volume between the insurance and the service. companies can, in theory, invoice regardless of volume they favor, they are merely going to receives a fee the agreed cost. (In different words, the well-being middle would invoice $12,000, yet they might merely receives a fee a grand entire of $9500 because of the indisputable fact that is the settlement.) So, you're paying truly less than the $2800 or somewhat extra - counting on your top insurance or perhaps if anybody is in community. the different element you should element in - no longer merely is the well-being middle going to invoice, yet so is the OB-GYN, the anesthesiologist (except she is going with none variety of soreness meds), any labs that are done on her and the child, and whichever pediatrician examines the child after beginning and discharges her or him. it truly is assuming there is truly no themes. Your superb wager is to the contact member facilities at your insurance business enterprise and ask them for specifics adapted on your plan.

I wouldn't start trying until you have coverage. Doctors appointments, prenatal care and any complications that may pop up can add up quickly, not to mention the cost of the actual birth.
Also, be warned, just because you plan to start trying to have a baby in October does not mean you will be lucky enough to conceive right away. A lot of couples have to try for months, sometimes years before they are blessed with a child (even if you're perfectly healthy and have nothing wrong)

Do you have health insurance in South Korea? When you move to America will you have a job? Most employers offer health insurance. If you are not insured when you come to America and need prenatal care, you can apply for "Charity Care" at your local hospital or clinic.
