Is this a good setup for a gaming pc?
I'm planning to build a gaming pc for under £500 and would like peoples opinions on the components I've chosen

I'm not too concerned about playing everything on the highest possible settings, I just want something that will run the latest games as my current pc is ancient and would cost a fortune to upgrade. This is my first time building a pc so I would also like to double check that all the parts are compatible before I place the order. I already have a copy of Windows 7.
Also, I've decided to go for AMD over Intel to save money. How much difference does it make if any? Thanks in advance.

Looks pretty good. When it comes to Intel vs AMD though, here is a site that benchmarks pretty much everything the processor is used for. It also includes some games.

This is a website with benchmarks from some more recent and demanding games:

As you can see, the intel blows that Phenom out of the water. If you dont want to future-proof your CPU for a bit, I would definately go with the intel. Even though it may cost almost double the price of the phenom you selected you definately will be set with that CPU for a while. EDIT: Ideally it would be an Intel i5 2500k, or even an i5 3570k Ivy Bridge (Ivy Bridge Will be slightly faster) but if you're a bit tight on cash I would still definitely go with an i3. You can see an i3 still beats the Phenom. Try going for a "k" model (EX: Intel i5 2500k) for easy overclocking, which you may want to do as games get more and more demanding. IMPORTANT: The motherboard you selected is not compatible with intel CPU's. AMD motherboards are only compatible with AMD CPU's and Vice Versa with intel, so you would have to pick a new one. No worries though, they run around the same prices. Just make sure the intel motherboard supports the i5 (wouldn't be a chance that a modern motherboard doesn't, but can't be too sure) and I recommend it also supporting the i7 if you don't want to upgrade your motherboard in the near future.
