What's the point of God testing someone if he already knows the outcome?

Update:

God really dropped the ball on testing me consider Im an atheist...So Im guessing that makes me stronger? Well actually it does.

Update 2:

So that means God made Adam and Eve stronger? I dont really think that benefited them at all.

  • Never been a parent?

Let's imagine a scenario in which a parent sees their child do something wrong, but the child does not know he has been seen. The parent asks the child what has happened, despite already knowing what has happened. The child may tell the truth and mitigate the corrective discipline he will receive, the child may lie and show that he needs more correction (both for what he did and of his willingness to lie), so the parent's action does have some value in asking the child what he did despite already knowing what he did.

The same is true of us offering things to God (such as sacrifices in the past before Jesus' sacrifice, and prayers and helping others now, etc.). Does God need them? Of course not. But just as a mother loves that macaroni art picture her child made in school that says that the child loves her (of course the mother knew that already, but it was nice to see and hear the effort, was it not?), God loves our effort that shows that we love Him, though He already knows and does not need the effort any more than a mother needs that macaroni art picture from her child.

When you start with a faulty premise, the conclusion will be in error. Your faulty premise is "he already knows the outcome". This is not always true. While God has sometimes actively intervened in human history, as recorded in Scripture (Moses and the Prophets for sure, the Gospels, James, Peter, and Revelation as well) most often the outcome is undetermined, and God is even "surprised" or "troubled" to LEARN how mankind responded.

For example(s) Genesis 2:19 GOD brought to animals to Adam to see what he would call them. (GOD did not know the names of the animals until AFTER Adam named them = Adam’s choice).

Genesis 6:5-7 the LORD regretted that He had made man… “For I regret that I have made them”. (GOD knew it was possible, maybe probable, but not predetermined!)

Genesis 11:5,6 GOD is on another fact-finding mission and comes to the knowledge that “…Indeed, the people are one…”

Genesis 18:20-21 GOD again goes to earth to find out for Himself, “I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to me; and if not, I will know”. Future knowledge only obtained through observation.

Genesis 22:11-12 … “for now I know that you fear GOD, since you have not withheld your son…” Obviously GOD did not know UNTIL Abraham acted.

1 Samuel 15:11 … “I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king,…”.

Jeremiah 32:35 “…nor did it come to my mind that they should do this abomination,…”. GOD Himself says it never entered his mind that His chosen people would sacrifice children to the fire. This was NEWS to Him.

There are multiple other Scripture references that depict GOD as growing angry when men act in a way that He did not expect them to. Certainly this was not theatrics on GODs part?!?

There are also multiple Scripture references that say GOD can be persuaded to “relent”, “not destroy”, or “have mercy” on people or nations. Men have shown the ability to merit or lose GODs favor by their WORKS/DEEDS/ACTIONS.

The premise that you proposed (rooted in Calvinism) asserts that GOD has already arranged everything and we are just going through life as puppets. This reeks of Fatalism (see Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh).

Blessed be His Name, that this is not the case. GOD created us to love him, and we demonstrate that love by following Deuteronomy 5: 29 “Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever”. (emphasis added)

Good question. If god is a good man/woman why does he/she create humans and lead them to suffering, decay, and death. That would make god a terrible, evil and a selfish person. He should not have created humans at first and saved all from the problems we face everyday.

Source(s): It is depressing to believe in god.

It's not for His entertainment. God tests us tp make our faith stronger. How would He know whose side we were on if we always have it easy? Its easy to believe in something when everything is going well for you. But when you're TESTED, you show your true colors. That way, not only God sees our true hearts but WE see our true hearts as well.

God knows how we will perform. But do you know it?

"Testing" isn't causing you to doubt. It's not God's fault if you abandon belief and reject God. That's on you.

"Testing" is about us putting our faith in God, in trusting him, in depending upon him.

just because he knows the outcome doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. we can't just skip that part of our life.
