What flavors compliment tomato soup...either added to the soup or served with?

Normally i like to add shredded cheddar, or serve with grilled cheese sandwich, but today no cheese :(

Basil & bacon are two that come to mind.

If you don't have cheese, try making a fried lunch meat sandwich to go with the soup. Rather than using cheese on the inside with some bologna, ham, or sliced turkey, you could put a lot of butter on the inside. Another idea would be some mayo or mustard to add a liquid type center to the sandwich without having to use butter. Sandwiches really are the best compliment to tomato soup and it wouldn't be the same if you didn't have a sandwich as a side dish.

You could also do a fresh salad with any type of vegetables or greens that you have on hand. You can use fresh vegetables or steam some that come in the freezer bags. The possibilities for salad additions are pretty much endless. One other option would be some garlic bread. You can top it with tomato slices and a drizzle of olive oil for some more flavor and to make the dinner have a little more substance.

Make a piece of wheat or rye toast, then cut it into cubes and add it to the soup. Or add crumbled crackers. Add some chopped fresh basil.

Some people like to add some cooked rice or macaroni.

Tomato soup is good with a ham sandwich - cold or hot, with or without any flavor of cheese you have.

EDIT: I forgot to say tomato soup is also good with a grilled tuna fish sandwich or a cold egg salad or chicken salad sandwich.

Toast, grill or roast up any tortillas, french sticks etc and brush with olive oil and garlic.

Sour cream or a dollop of mashed basil, pine nuts and garlic.

    Dip celery sticks.

Saute up some onion, peppers or steamed zucchini to add in.

Cook up some small pasta shells to put in.

Dashes of lemon juice and/or worcestershire sauce.

    Baked potato skins.
