Should we still go on vacation?
My wife and I have committed about $13,000 to our upcoming vacation by booking hotels, airline tickets etc. and about 70% of this is non-refundable. One of my wife's sisters has fallen seriously ill (20% chance of life threat) and is in hospital. She is surrounded by family members who live closer to the hospital than we do, and we only visit on weekends because of the distance we live. We are wondering if we should still go on vacation or cancel.
My wife feels that we should still go on vacation but keep in touch with what is happening, since we stand to lose so much money if we don't go. I tend to agree with her. What should we do?

I would consider going, make sure you can call her and email her everyday and I don't know if she would be well enough to Skype? If you feel she is in any serious danger you could change your flight to come straight back. You would need to consider how the family would feel about you going, because if they judge you it may be far worse for you to go and then ruin relationships. Plus will you be able to enjoy yourselves if you are worrying the whole time?
Its a tough one.
I guess its a really personal decision :o(

See if you can get travel insurance that will cover your costs if your sister-in-law takes a turn for the worse and you have to return home early, then go.
In today's world with cell phones and e-mail, you can stay in touch every day (or more if you want) and get home in a day if you have to.

Go on holiday, but keep in touch. If anything happens you can always leave your holiday early.

your decision. I wouldn't go since I wouldn't have as much fun, but hey that's just me.
