Hi fellow seniors, do you wear a hat in the hot weather?
Both hubby and I do especially at the moment when the temps here on the east coast of England are hovering in the mid 20c/70f.
I have fair hair and complexion so I have to lather on the sunscreen and rarely venture outside without my old faithful hat.
I'm not going to win any fashion awards but I do feel safer and comfortable wearing it.
How about you do you wear a hat of some kind under the sun?

I'm afraid 'hats are one of my weaknesses. I can't resist a new hat it it looks good, so I have quite a collection. I have a James Stewart battered Stetson, a Welch check cloth flat cap, a 'Zorro' hat I got in Spain, an East German ex-military fur hat, a Thai straw hat, three baseball caps and. a Godfather trilby and my favourite, a blue cap with a flat headpiece, decorated with a blue star and gold braid on the brim, issued to the Swedish Olympic Diving team in the late 1990's and given to me by a friend who hosted the team on a tour of Fort Lauderdale.
I go out with a different hat virtually every time....

If I'm going to be outside more than 20 or 30 minutes when it is is sunny, or less time if I'm in direct sunlight instead of shade, then I wear a hat and sunglasses too. I've worn hats for decades, and so has my husband. We live in central Florida and the sun is strong here all year. It is 5:00 a.m. here and comfortable; 76°F (24.4°C). Today's forecast is for another warm day: 93°F (33.8°C). Lily, at 20°C I would be tempted to wear a sweater or light jacket....:)
We all need some sunshine so we get enough Vitamin D. But; too much of a good thing will cause skin cancer, cataracts, and add wrinkles....:) Last year my father-in-law and 3 of my friends were treated for skin cancer....I love being outside, but I do try to be cautious.
I have two packable woven hats like Marilyn describes; one I keep in my car and the other I keep for traveling. I have straw hats, a Tilly, a boonie, and a wool felt fedora for winter. My husband has even more hats than I do....:0 Two of my favorite hats are made in Australia; they look good, are made well, are comfy, and wear well.
Stay cool everyone....

I do if I am going to be near water as the reflected heat can be damaging & catch people out & sunscreen is used anyway.
I have a couple of old straw hats & recently found a woven paper one, safe in the sun even though I am not fair.
Some years ago I got very badly burned through the car window in Scotland & was travelling in the end with sheets of kitchen roll draped down my left arm
My winter hats are another matter & I have a collection of embroidered felt hats & glass-headed hatpins to go with them as well as a couple of wax-coated hats for really bad weather.

I haven't worn a hat at all since the last time my mother was able to force me to at age 5. When I lived in Syracuse, NY, where the winter temerature went to 15 below zero, I did compromise and wear ear muffs. I live in Miami Beah where the temperature is in the nineties and the tropical sun is blazing. I do not wear a hat. My skin is very light and I never take off my shirt because I would burn to a crisp, but my arms and face have had constant exposure to the sun and do not burn. I even lived in Rio De Jaeiro for a while and never wore a hat in the full tropical sun.

I wear a hat and it has a long shoe lace tied under the chin to stop it blowing away.
I too, have a fair skin which burns easily and blisters at the very mention of the scorching sun. For me it's lightweight, baggy, pale cotton blouse with long sleeves, topped off with a white cotton hat, charmingly cool!
Unless covering up and wearing a hat becomes fashionable hot weather gear I'd never win any prize - or is there one for being sensible I wonder.

If are going to the lake or river, I always bring a staw hat with me and even a baseball cap to wear in the water while swimming if I feel I am out too long in the sun.
I also bring one of my summer wide brim hats with me in a shopper bag if we are walking in the city.
I have a couple that can be placed in a shopper and spring back to life without wrecking the hats, great hats for traveling with, one is 50 sun protection and has a string tie in case the wind starts up, won't blow off.
We often are able to walk in the city on the shady side of the st. but I bring my hat in case we must walk in the sun for a long period.
Have light skin, burn easy and have suffered with having a small pre cancer growth on the tip of my nose in the past.
Don't want any more skin trouble plus the strong sun is bad for you hair as well.
I encouraged my husband to get a few straw hats for himself to wear as well but he rarely wears them, not good as his hairline is receding and his forehead gets red..
In the fall I must wear a beret and in winter I have a couple of fur hats. Once my head gets cold, I am done for, always get a headache if my head gets cold.
In 2000, I had some minor laser surgery over here in Hungary while still having hot weather.
we were returning to the US so I coud not put off the surgery until colder weather.
I waited a few weeks to recover( so sore and red) but just had to go swimming a few more times before we left the county.
I had a large wide brimmed hat on, dark sunglasses and a scarf around my neck, head area which I wore in the water.
People were looking at me like I was crazy, poniting and I even heard the term,"Michael Jackson" used.
No one was even using sunscreen here then, now I do see sunscreen sold everywhere here and people wearing hats and sunglasses in the water as well.
Maybe I started a new trend over here, don't think so, just took them some time to see the dangers of too much sun.

My ancestors are from the British Isles and I avoid the direct sunlight whenever I can. I have practically every shade of hat for both summer and winter. I love to watch movies that are made in England especially because women and frequently men wear appropriate hats. I get all kinds of compliments and have to wonder why everyone doesn't wear them. Our temperature right now is 119.

Hello Lily, I don't like the heat at all Lily!
I stay out of the sun as much as possible!
I also have fair skin, I use sun block!
But I don't sit in the sun or really do anything in the sun, except walk to and from my car, or to and from my car into a doctor's office or store!
I do not wear many hats!
I do love a hat though! I used to wear them!

I don't wear a hat at home in the hot weather as, here in Fife, it never gets that hot to need one. I also have thick hair which protects my head. However, when I am on holiday in Lanzarote and lying by the pool in the heat, reading my book, even though I wear sunglasses, I do wear a baseball cap as it also helps to keep the sun out my eyes.

When I really do need to be out in the sun,eg,working in the yard,I wear a large brimmed hat, though I avoid it as much as possible and do most of the work at daybreak, during the hot summer I even wear it just going to the letterbox, not only to help avoid skin cancer, but also my fair sensitive skin burns easily.I don't like hot summer days.
