The wax is for protection, but _sometimes_ too much wax can accumulate, block the ear canal, and make things sound weird. I've had that problem on and off during my life. I've had doctors deal with it, and, copying what the doctors did, I dealt with it myself.
Serendipitously and many years later, I found that when I changed to a diet that is lower in fats and oils, I secreted only enough ear wax to keep my ears healthy. Now when I clean my ears with a Q-tip I usually find very little wax. Another good side effect of the diet was that it eliminated the the wax like deposits I used to find when I combed my hair.

It evolutionary thing to keep dust and bug from entering ear. Dust and bug stick to wax and not enter ear.
