Anyone here have any experiences with the new LED maglites?
talking about the D-cell ones. i've used the old incandescence ones. only LED lights i've used are those small ones with the 9 LED's and they take 3 AAA batteries. and the on off switch is on the tailpiece.
lights like this

these lights claim to never burn out, but i get less than 4 months out of them because they burn out slowly one by one. I was looking at the new LED mags and they want around 30 bucks for them, and they say they never burn out also. but i'm afraid of shelling out that kinda cash just for it to burn out like the others i've used. that's why i've been partial to incandescence, cause when they blow, you just change the bulb. but i do like LED's cause they are much brighter and the battery lasts longer.
well their not necessarily new, but their new to me. i was still used to the old mags

I have those same lights, I bought mine from Big Lots LOL. I bought a few for $3.00 each and they suck up the batteries much worse then the better LED flashlights I have bought. Had one flash light just fully blow on me.
Now I purchased 2 Garrity all chrome finish single bulb LED flashlights with a Wenger Delmont Swiss Army Knife combo. They were $40.00 each set, and I have been using those LED Flashlights for 8 years this coming Christmas. No issues with the LED, and the 3 AAA Batteries last for about a year with the heavy use I use them.
Also purchased a single LED pen light from Energizer that was $9.00 from Auto Zone about a year ago. Use at work almost every day, carried in my pocket and has a ton of scratches on the aluminum light. Still works, still on original batteries, and highly abused with drops and tossing to other workers in the back of a tractor trailer's trailer.
LED's quality depends on the manufacturer. I have a 3 cell D battery incandescent Maglight my Grandfather gave me 10 years ago + when he retired from Security Work. That sucker still running on the original bulb and is rugged as hell. I haven't heard anything bad about the LED Maglights, Consumer Reports still recommends them as the all around toughest flashlight.
Source(s): July 2012 issue of Consumer Reports 2012 had article on 4 different Rugged Flashlights. Mag Light LED was best for price all around and kept working with all torture test. - chrisLv 79 years ago
For the price of the Mag lite you can get more lumens somewheres else for a lot less. Folks it is all about lumen power not price not LED or any other factor the more lumens the brighter the light. Coleman puts out a 200 lumen flashlight for less than $20.usd while the best led mag lag is only 100 lumens so compare lumens when your looking at lights not price, not brand, not looks. If it doesn't list the lumen power it probably has less than 50 lumens.

I might hold the world record for a person with the most modern flashlights. That's not an exaggeration.
I love the quality and construction of the Mag Instrument Maglites. But, I too have had issues with the bulbs burning-out. What I did was buy replacement LED bulbs.
NOTE! You will want to buy the higher watt replacement LED bulbs. Do NOT buy the cheaper stuff, as the light they emit is not as bright. Nite Ize has some great LED replacement bulbs. They offer a "standard" bulb (which I do NOT recommend) and a higher rated 1 watt bulb (which I highly recommend).

You pay for what you get, The LED Maglite is made in the USA, not like most of the junk coming out of China. I have several of the Mag Lite LED and have had no problems at all light and focus work just fine. Rayovac makes a very good line also.

I have a mag 2aa pro plus that claims 210 lumens(I think) it's ok, not great, the beam is very donut like and the focuser doesn't work like the incans, I was excited to see a mag with this lum rating but my lowes 2c 120 lumen cheapo beats it in throw and spill :( also the tail cap has to be skewed in completely to work, even a hair turn will disconnect the connection, I love maglite but they need to step the game up of fenix will out run them...next light will be a fenix. Check them out.

$30 dollar flashlights are not expensive for a good quality flash light. The LED mag light is much brighter than the older ones and works great. I keep one in my vehicle and the batteries don't go dead over long periods of time even in the hot and cold.

Because maglites are much better quality than other, cheaper LED flashlights, i doubt they will burn out fast, ive got a 33 dollar LED maglite i picked up at wallmart (my gf and i needed a dependable flashlight as we didnt even have one) now this one claims illumination up to 398 meters (300 meters is basically 1000 ft) and this thing lights up my apartment better than the lights i have on the celing. So i dont think itd be a bad buy to be honast, maglites are built like brick outhouses and my LED one has yet to fail me in any way.

Check this one out. It is listed at 900 lumens which is incorrect, but it very very bright.
