Stray cat spraying in my house, however...?

There is a local cat that I am considering adopting, he is friendly and I feed him well -- however he sometimes comes into my house and sprays and I can't necessarily just keep the doors closed all the time (multiple kids -- he tends to slip in when the door opens).

He is a friendly Tom and is approachable, but still comes into my room, specifically to spray -- if I happen to leave my room door open.

I've heard that tom cats tend to spray in order to create an area that they will feel safe in and am wondering if this tom is spraying in an attempt to try and get adopted or if he sprays because a queen used to inhabit the house and the tom misses her.

Will adopting the tom and giving him free access to the house give him a sense of security that will prevent him from spraying? (assuming I neuter him as well)

Update:

I have no other cats, so its unlikely that the tom is spraying because of rivalry.

He is probably spraying the same area as he can smell where he has sprayed before. Wash the area with a strong biological soap powder and warm water solution to get rid of his scent and see if it occurs again. In the mean time keep your internal doors shut so that he cannot wander around your house when he manages to get in.

a number of those should be the neighbor's cats, some will be strays. We do TNR the following, the humane society does the operations for loose yet I extremely ought to drop off and %. up at a particular time. It did provide up the kitten inhabitants! AND the spraying and cats in warmth. I do feed them, we go by an 18 lb bag of food each and each month, i do not begrudge them the bag, that is portion of retaining them healthful adequate they could wrestle off an infection and ailment. I extremely have a water bowl down too. in case you'll hit upon a tom cat rescue, who can do TNR for you for this section, no longer in effortless words will the lads provide up spraying, the girls is purely no longer yowling in warmth anymore both. They stay out their lives, seize rats (wager you do not choose those, rats are always alongside seashores), and do the finest they could. attempt googling 'tom cat rescue' and your city's call. lots of them are on line, then you actually e-mail or telephone the people and note in case you may artwork out some association to get the cats all fixed. no longer in effortless words do they get fixed, they get ear tipped (to coach a feral inhabitants being regarded after) and de-flead, de-wormed, vaccinated AND microchipped. that is totally a lot.

    Firstly, get him neutered.

Secondly, give him free access to the house and hopefully he will get better but if not there is a product called feliway which is a synthetic pheremone which makes cat feel happy.
