Bettman: The players win too much money. What do you think?

Gary Bettman said today August 23th, "We try to negociate but it is difficult to do so when the players win too much money in this league." What do you think about that? Is it really legit for Bettman to say that?

Its in hockey that the salaries are the 3rd lowest on average compared to the 3 other major leagues in North America (NBA, NFL, MLB). These players, they are the best in the world, don't they deserve a good salary? They are only 400-500 and most of them have a salary around 2M$. Just in NBA, the average salary is 5.5M$/year. In NHL, they worked just as hard, they did the same sacrifices than in the NBA, so please Gary don't tell me the players win too much money!

I just think that affirmation is just a sign of weakness from Bettman, he should accept the fact the players gave everything to him last lock-out, not blast them out freely like that.

Update:

@Tex Habs: Yes I agree tickets are way to expansive but NHL being a buisness before a sport, they will certainly not lower the price for the fans. It's sad, because we fans bring 33% of the income of the league. What if we boycotted and did not buy our tickets, I would like to see Bettman's face at this occasion. But in cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal this will never happen so he will be the eternal winner on the ticket price, unfortunately.

Update 2:

@CloudCity: Good point but equity is a vital concept between the employer and the employees. The players in NHL got a 31% salary increase since the last lockout. In the case of Gary Bettman, his salary increased but no less than 116% since the last lock-out (7,95M/year), I mean look who's talking!

Update 3:

@Watchdog: Most probably, because dictator Bettman won't open the disscusions and don't want to make concessions to the players. He says he wants less flexibility, haha its the first time I heard that from an employer.

Yeah, well, Bettman is on the owners' side; of course he's going to whine about the players wanting too much money. The players spend their entire lives trying to get to the NHL for what usually is a brief time. They bust their butts night after night and risk injury. Why shouldn't they share in the wealth they earn for the owners?

Bettman and the owners caused a whole season to be lost because they insisted on a salary cap.

    They got what they wanted.

Then some owners and GMs circumvented the cap by offering long term, front loaded contracts.

How is this the player's fault. Bettman should be concentrating on getting his owners to toe the line.

And that last contract stipulated that the player's share of revenues only increased if the league mabe more money so he has nothing to complain about.

You cannot compare the NHL for players salary to the NFL, MLB or NBA... the NHL ratings are about on par with the WNBA.

So why would you expect them to get paid the same as in the NFL, MLB or even the NBA ?

If you're going to compare, it would have to be what percentage of the NHLs earnings do the players typically get compared to the Owners, versus other major sports).

It's based on revenue sharing. A more profitable league should pay their players more money. I think the league is fine where it is; the players make a fair amount of money, and you have to realize that a lot of money goes towards the players/maintenance (For example, high-tech facilities, medical staff etc..)

I don't trust the owners however; many of them try to hide their profits. They're deceptive.

It's a game. Bettman represents the owners, so of course they want lower payroll costs. Fehr represents the players, so of course they want higher salaries. Therefore they're going to say what serves their interests. However when the owners plead poverty, I think you have to take it with a grain of salt. Nashville is one of those teams that one presumes is very poor, but yet they had the money to resign Shea Weber.
