What kind of organization would a playgroup be?
I'm trying to start a local playgroup. I want to try and get donations to help pay for liability insurance (in case a kid got hurt) and help pay for the cost of renting a gym to meet at. I would volunteer my time, so no employees. I don't want anyone to be able to sue *me* in case of injury or anything. Would I set this up as a non-profit or what?
I'm not talking about daycare. I'm talking about a playgroup of parents and their children meeting at local places (like a school gym or hall) to play and socialize. The local gyms wont even rent out to me unless I'm official and have a million dollars in liability insurance. We need a place like the gym to meet at because I live in a small town with small houses not appropriate for large gatherings, and in the winter we can't meet at a park with snow on the ground with babies. I don't want to buy the insurance myself but hope to get donations from local businesses to cover the expenses.

Not a nonprofit organization if your only 'mission' is to buy yourself personal liability insurance. It takes more that the fact that you don't expect to make any profits to qualify as a legal not for profit entity. Incorporating will protect your personal assets. Look at the Small Business Administration web site for information on how to do so, http://www.sba.gov/

What you're talking about sounds like daycare.
A playgroup is usually parents getting together with their kids and having a good time somewhere like a park or someones house. They meet at different places each time. It's not a structured group or organization. Just an informal gathering.

Let's simplify this a bit.
First off, a parent would only be able to win a lawsuit against you if you were negligent. If you have standard, age-appropriate toys and gym equipment, then you would have little to worry about.
Second, if you're still worried, then have each parent sign a waiver before allowing them to play at your playgroup.
