For a pinched sciatic nerve what is the best mattress , posturpedic, termupedic, plush, firm, etc? Why?

My pinched sciatic nerve is keeping me awake at night, my bed is getting old, and I think it's time for a new one, nonetheless I'm unsure what type of bed/mattress would be best for my pinched nerve.

Since the problem is within your body it usually doesn't make any difference what mattress you sleep on. It makes good advertising for them to say it makes a difference but it really doesn't. If you want relief for your pain then you have to get rid of the cause of the pain and once you do that you will be able to sleep on whatever you want and not be in pain. Tight muscles in your lower back are causing the pain by pressing into the nerves leaving the spine that go to your legs to send pains into them. This includes the sciatic as well. Freeing up your back muscles will release the tight muscles in your lower back pressing into those nerves and here's how to free them up for your relief:

    Back:

(do while sitting on a chair)

Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front, and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm as straight as possible. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, then release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.

For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

It's never been the mattresses fault for the pain. All one has to do is look back a bit in history before we had them to see what people slept on and were never in pain. It's why we still have so many that enjoy camping where they don't really have a mattress and don't have pains either. Their back muscles aren't tight so they can do that.

Mac, I've had a lot of experience with pinched sciatic nerves and I'll pass on to you what I took years to ferret out. First, "there is [no] magic mattress to fix your problem, however after saying that I will give you the formula! ' Any ' good quality mattress will work; Not to soft and not to hard, just a good medium mattress. Now to the next part..... If you are suffering from this problem chronically, that is it continues to come back on you, you'll need to see a physical therapist and get a regiment of "Stretch Exercises" that you will have to do at home, RELIGIUOSLY, You must do them every day! Now [3] important things to learn; 1. these will be floor exercises where you s-t-r-e-t-c-h and pull. [the problem originates in your lower back. 2. You have to discipline yourself to do these floor exercises every day [very important] 3. Don't get a list of exercises that is to LONG, just a few, maybe six or so movements, that will help you to keep you every day schedule [and not procrastinate]. In the mean time when you get an extreme attack try to incorporate Warm tub soaks to help relieve the immediate pain. Good luck my friend, believe me if you follow these instructions you'll soon be able to manage Sciatica. PS if you feel that you need to consult a Doctor, try a good Chiropractor.

Ohhhhhh I feel your pain :(( I have suffered from lower back problems on and off for about 10 years, and this year in particular I have experienced debilitating bouts of back pain which lasts for as long as 5 days, and leaves me unable to drive a car, do daily bits and pieces that we so often take for granted, and even walking without being in excruciating pain. I have tried literally everything to help with the pain, and I can now confidently say that I have felt the best that I have in a long time and I swear it is all because of ongoing physiotherapy that I have been having. A combination of exercise, deep tissue massage and dry needling has helped me manage my back pain enormously. While I know that some treatments work for some and not others, I do highly recommend that you see a specialised person who can help set you up with specific exercises that are designed best for your needs and pain management. If you can have regular massages with needling or acupuncture I'm sure that will help too. Another option might be to try cortisone injections if you haven't already, pilates and to also have your feet and how you walk assessed/scanned to see if you need to be wearing insoles or orthotics to help align and straighten you. A few simple measures, but like I said, all have worked really well for me ~*knocks on wood*!!! Wishing you the very best of health Nick . (hugs)

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment https://healthy.im/stop-sciatica-now

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication

I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.

I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.
