Is it time for us to cut back on government and help the American people?

MItt Romney said this on JUne 8 of this year:

He [President Obama] says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers, did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people"

1) How do you simultaneously cut back on government AND help the American people? If you cut back on government isn't the idea to let the American people fend for themselves?

2) Do we have too many police and fire fighters?

Update:

@Zombie - so you think we have too many Police and Firemen... really? Do you think our armed forces are too big, and that we spend too much on them? The vast majority of the debt that this country has incurred over the past 10 years is because of the two wars. It is 24% of our budget, and defense related spending in 2012 will have topped 1 trillion dollars. Maybe we should make cuts to there somewhere?

Update 2:

@Debra - Really? We have too many senators and congresspeople? The very people we elect to represent us and govern the country as dictated by the Constitution? Should we slash our foreign service budget? Should we close our embassies?

How do you propose that we "cut government, not services". Who would implement the services then?

Update 3:

@zombie How exactly does too much government impede job creation? How does too much government make people lazy exactly? Please explain.

Update 4:

@Ryan - He is pretty much saying that we pay these people too much money and that we need to slash many of the jobs associated with them. - Not the occupation themselves, but the number of people who hold these jobs.

Yes, we MUST drastically cut back on all the luxuries spoiled American tax-payers currently enjoy at tax-payer expense, like the US Military, the Internet, the National Electrical Grid, Air Traffic Control and the Interstate system....

If Americans WANT these things, let them organize, pay for, and provide them locally!

Police and fire fighters should be funded out of local budgets. They're not federal employees and it's not the job of the President or Congress to say we need more or less of them. If your community needs more police and fire fighters, then they can hire more. If your community has more than it needs, then it can cut back. Communities should manage and pay for the services they use.

Big government likes to promise more police, fire fighters and teachers, but what they usually deliver is more bureaucrats and administrators--people who make big salaries but don't actually do anything except shuffle paperwork. These bureaucrats just consume tax dollars but don't actually improve anything.

The number of police officers and firefighters is a matter for states, counties, and cities to settle for themselves. The federal government has NO authority to interfere. If the money (largess) passed out by pandering politicians for police and fire departments was allowed to stay in the hands of the EARNERS unless taxed by state and local authorities for LOCAL issues, there would be a LOT less federal government to interfere. Also, less money would be taken in taxes by state and local authorities since layers of bureaucracy will be eliminated between the tax collectors and the tax users. The distinction needs to be rewnewed between what is a FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY OR LOCAL issue and end the federal pandering with stolen earnings.

Hes not saying eliminate these occupations, just that we need to limit goverment spending. I believe most towns have an excess, the sheriffs department and jail are the tallest building in our town. In all actuality police officers are more like roman tax collectors, it costs money to lock up a crack dealer or rapist and thats no good. But if you find some teens drinking a six pack its a profitable situation, mom and dad have to pay bail, lawyers fees, court costs, and for a court ordered alcohol treatment program. Everyone wins.

    1. Too much government impedes job creation and encourages laziness. Less government equals more power and control to the people.

    2. Since government usually runs this, the probable answer is yes. I would say that the problem with union hacks is not the number, it's how expensive they are because they have unfair employee benefits. You can get rid of the benefits without getting rid of staff, and still have less government, too difficult for a liberal to understand I suppose.

What we have is too much government.. not the firemen and police but senators, congressmen, people who work in foreign and domestic service, people who work for the president and especially the huge group who work for the first lady.. why.. we didn't elect her for anything.

We need to cut back government, not services. Go back to basics.
