Why Does the United States Trade with China But not with Cuba?
China has a strict communist government, and yet the US has no problem trading with China. On the other hand, Cuba, also communist, has been under trade embargoes for decades that have only lessened in recent years. What are the logical reasons for this apparent contradiction???
@ Daniel: That is true now, but when trade started, that was not the case.
@ Alexsandr; not really true, remember what happened in Tienanmen Square? That happened in 1989, and Mao died in 1976. China still practices communism. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/j...
@?: Why do you think I am asking the question??? I want to know more about the world around me. If you have something to offer to the discussion, fine. No need to insult me or other people.
I have no "sore feelings" at all. I used that as an example that there is still a strict government there, and recently China censored use of the Internet as well. I am only stating this to say it seems hypocritical to punish one country while another practices similar policies and its overlooked.
@ De'angelos woman: I never thought about that angle, the Cuban Americans political views.
@ ?: I agree with you that the US has done a lot of shady things, I also know that the CIA is used a lot to start civil wars in developing countries.
To everyone saying that Cuba is poor, they are poor in part due to the trade restrictions on them.
I'm arguing the point that when the US started shipping jobs to China, there was equal poverty and communism with Cuba. Here are a list of companies that have had factories in China for 20 or 30 years: http://jiesworld.com/international_corporations_in... This trade with the US has aided China to become the powerhouse it is today.

Most of what has posted applies however; we need to remember that their exists a strong Hispanic lobby of Cuban expatriates that hate Castro and his regime...also the fact that the tiny island handled and owned the US in the Bay of Pigs incident..it took decades to live down that embarrassment.

China is not communist anymore. At least I'm like 90% sure on that. They're something else.
But its because Cuba has, and always will represent the independence of south America. Cuba was the last stand for anyone who did not want to be a capitalist. It lied dormant peacefully for a very long time, after its history of tension. But the embargo was never lifted because Cuba never changed. They have always resented corporate and north American influence in S.A. and only recently have other S.A. nations got behind that. They witnessed for themselves the devastation of our stupid little system.
China, on the other hand, is a corporate embodiment all in its own. Just like America is. They're essentially one in the same, and America would literally be NOTHING without Chinese goods and support. All our electronics, all our cheap trinkets and plastic lifestyles would die. Just die. So they don't have a choice other than to keep trading with China. Plus we owe them more than anything in our own country will ever be worth. So, if we were to stop trading, it would cause a lot of problems.

Former alliance with the Russians while living in close proximity to the USA. China buying of USA's debt. Race.

China claims communism, but they are communist in that a few people hold all the money and power and they are the government whilst everyone gets relatively nothing. otherwise it is capitalist seeking to fatten the wallets of those few people at the top.
so it is communist in society in that they punish their workers for defying orders or to stop them from leaving and also pay them peanuts.
capitalist in that they seek to make loads of money off cheap labour

To keep China happy. They're getting frighteningly powerful so everyone wants to be friends with them.

If I was selling apples, and my neighbor that I did not like too much was willing to buy those apples for a fair price, Id sell them to him. What would really sweeten the deal is if that same neighbor had oranges for sale and gave me a decent price on them, see I like oranges, but I cant grow them too well in my soil.
Now, my other neighbor, I dont like him too much either, but he has nothing of value that I want. So F him.
