Door key won't turn in lock -- help plz?

Our front door has a Yale bolt lock model 197 installed that is giving us some trouble. Formerly, the key would turn only the inner cylinder when locking/unlocking from outside. Recently, the outer cylinder of the lock sometimes turns, which makes using the key very difficult. When the outer cylinder gets out of alignment, the key will either not go in the lock, not turn the inner cylinder or not come out of the lock.

Can this be fixed easily, or will the lock need replacement?

I don't know how to disassemble the lock, but I could probably follow some instructions.

Update:

These locks are not cheap, and I'm thinking that since the lock is mechanical, it can be fixed. I just don't know how to take it apart to have a look inside. There is a small sliding tab under the base that moves about 1/4 inch back and forth, but I can't determine it's purpose.

First of all; double cylinder deadbolts like yours are against the building code, where I live. They are now only legal in institutions or prisons.

Secondly; a professional locksmith like myself could have your lock working like new in less than five minutes. It needs some adjustment...not replacement. Due to my oath of secrecy I cannot tell you much more and even if I could, you would likely not understand the terminology, anyway.

  • Worn keys, worn tumblers or just plain worn out. You really can not fix a lock, even so, it would need to be taken out and if your that far, might as well replace it - If it is a fancy handle and stuff, you can usually only buy the tumblers & keys.

The issues you're conversing approximately are commonplace in a Pontiac from 2000 to present. that's a secure practices function. additionally while you're no longer careful it's going to randomly lock you out of your automobile if the doorways are closed and the vehicle is working. solid success!

Put some oil on the door key and see if that does the trick. locks do dry up inside at some time or other.
