Basset and vegetarian diet?
What are the disadvantages/dangers (if any) if I feed my basset food which is basically 50% dog food and 50% veggies (like squash) and some greens perhaps. I have a vegetable garden in my backyard and I thought of perhaps feeding some vegetables to my dog. However I would like to know any "cons" with this idea because dogs are natural carnivores. Any advice would be appreciated.

Humans are omnivores. It is ok for us to eat plenty of veggies with meat.
Dogs are mainly carnivores. They do occasionally eat berries or other plants, but the majority of their diet needs to be meat.
Humans, who should eat plenty of veggies, don't even do well on a vegetarian diet. Vegetarians aren't as healthy and need to take a lot more supplements than the average person because they are denying themselves the nutrients they need from meat. So it only makes sense that a dog would fare even worse in terms of not getting enough nutrients.

I feed a very expensive high protein, meat based dog food. I have two small Chihuahuas. The little male is a fine well bred Registered dog. He did very well on an inexpensive dog food from the grocery store. I decided to get him a companion so he would not sleep so much. The Rescue companion turns out to be allergic to soy, Chicken and cereal grains that I know of. It is very difficult to determine as it takes so long to go through the change overs. Anyway, I now feed both dogs Natural Balance, limited ingredient dog food that is Bison and sweet potato. They both look great and are active and good weight as long as i make sure the male eats all his food and he can take a half hour if he wants. Dogs need dog food that is about 80% meat, and some vegetables. I do not let my dogs eat grass as they always spit it up. People put all kinds of chemicals on lawns. I give them cooked green beans or fresh crisp lettuce as treats, occasionally. They are not garbage disposers. If you read the labels of the better dog foods you will find some vegetables. mostly fiber. My dogs get corn on a rare occasion. They also love a carrot slice once in a while or a small slice of apple. Feed you dogs the meat they need and you will never need to buy treats. You can grow a few in your garden.

you could feed your dog that ... i would pick a quality dog food and add the veggies ... and dogs can live and thrive eating only a vegetarian diet, so supplementing a quality food with veggies would be fine ... i had my jack russell on a vegetarian diet for five years due to animal protein allergies and she did very well on the diet ... she was healthy and active ... but funny, when i put her on the prey model diet of raw meats, organs and bones, after six months she was MALNOURISHED ... there is a reason quality dog foods add fruits and veggies to dog food, because it is beneficial ... and just to correct you, dogs are omnivores which is the reason they can do well eating veggies ...

NO vegetairan diets for dogs or cats (especially a cat). They NEED proper protein. So if you want to give veggies, that's fine - but make it no more then 10% of their diet. Dog food already adds veggies if you read the ingredients.
Keep away from corn or corn based foods.

Foods that are healthy for us, may not be healthy to your dog. I use to give my dog little pieces of broccoli as a treat while training him. I gave the poor little guy pancreatitis which feels to a dog like acid reflux feels to us. My vet was angry with me for doing it and told me that dogs are not vegetarians. They need meat. Dogs don't eat vegetables in the wild. A dogs pancreas isn't designed to metabolize human foods like ours is. Broccoli wasn't toxic to my dog yet it caused a lot of pain for him. Don't give your dog veggies. Just stick to dog food. Panreatitis can lead to liver and kidney problems if not properly treated. Don't risk it. Just because some foods are good for us, doesn't mean it's good for a dog.

Don't
Dogs are carnivores. They NEED meat. They lack the enzymes to break down plants and gain nothing at all from eating them. Why do you want to feed your dog such an unnatural unwholesome diet?
You will end up with a very malnourished dog, the dog will be sickly, have kidney issues, have stomach issues, have hair lose, allergies and be miserable as well as live a shorter life
Feed it a natural diet and don't feed it one it can't even digest. Feed it what it needs, raw meat, raw bones and raw organs.

I would do research into what foods might be harmful to dogs before even thinking about this.
your best bet is to just stick to a high quality, grain-free dog food.
