How to tell when your cat/ kitten wants to play?

I've just got a kitten yesterday, and he's so cute! :) He's a ginger tabby and is six weeks old. I'm asking this question because he sometimes comes up to me, lightly presses his paw against my leg and makes a faint miaowing sound. What can this mean?

Kittens at that age usually want either play, petting, or food when they do that. Pick him up and pet him, if he is all wiggly and chewy, play with him. If he closes his eyes and lays down, he is just wanting to sleep and cuddle. Most kittens want to play and sleep a lot...

He clearly already likes and trusts you very much. This could be a request for some love and attention, a request to play or even simply scrounging food. Only you can find this out . . . I'd start by giving him the old love and attention bit and see if that does the trick - it often does, he's new to you, your house and everything around him so he will need reassurance that you love him, that he's welcome, that he's safe and so on.

When a cat meows it is saying 'I Want...' It's up to us to figure out what that want is. It could be to be scratched, to play, to eat etc. A kitten wants to play pretty much all the time.
