Office 2010 will save documents in older formats. click onm the big round ball in the upper left. Here you can choose to save in the format of any prior version of office you need.

Do you mean you aren't operating on XP ? What operating system do you have? Look it's always better to get the fully version of a system in case of upgrades etc. You can get pirated versions pretty cheap but they come with a price ya know with viruses and all them horses.
